The network begins to optimize for the wrong parameters, reinforcing its errors rather than correcting them.
Each backward pass through the trauma deepens the pathways that should have been severed.
The learning stops.
The forgetting begins.

But when he accidentally time-travels to the year 1995 and meets his fifteen-year-old father everything he once knew changes. For once in his life he doesn't recognize his father. His father is quicker to anger than Albus has ever seen. But it's obvious to Albus that there's more to just anger, something darker.
