Riquet’s eyes shone bright. He looked between the pile, Nero, and the pile again, before getting to work. Nero watched him turn over the scarves in his hands, rub them between his fingers. Immediately, he zeroed in on the softest scarf Nero had, and he resigned himself to never wearing it again.
Ah, well. A small price to pay, if it would make his day go better. Immediately, Nero began tearing through his clothes again. Surely, he had an extra hat?
“Riquet,” he said, his voice muffled by the walls of his closet, “How do you feel about another sweater?”

There was something wrong.
Fucking obviously, Nero thought to himself, locking the door behind him and throwing up a seal. He leaned against the door, then slid down, feeling rather silly but too tired to care. The clock on his wall—stolen from some gaudy tudor mansion in the North—clicked just past 9:03 AM. Early as sin, and Nero was already fighting a panic attack over a room full of stolen objects worth pounds more in diamonds than he was. Fuck’s sake, he thought, slightly hysterical, the mirror’s embedded with rubies. It’s 13th century, the hell is it doin’ in a room with me?
Most of his things were stolen, practical stuff Brad unsubtly threw at him because he knew it was the only shit Nero would actually keep. Combs. Novelty cutlery. Lamps. Candles. Teacups, worn and well-loved and exquisite, so you knew they were worth more than any tea you could put in them.
____Nero has a bad morning. It doesn't have to be a bad day.

Summary
Kaveh has achieved so much today, it should be fine to do this much for himself. It should be fine to enjoy this much. There is absolutely nothing that Al-Haitham could possibly do to ruin this day!
Of course, this is when Al-Haitham chooses to walk in covered in blood.
Kaveh has enough troubles on his plate even without dealing with his confusing relationship with and unfortunately lingering feelings for his stubborn, infuriating roommate. But when a strange conspiracy begins closing in on Al-Haitham and threatening the precarious balance of their daily lives, Kaveh finds himself having to reevaluate the nature of their relationship and reckon with the ghosts of the past.

There’s never really a good time, way, or reason to tell Kaveh about his long-lived, amoral, exiled, criminal ex-partner — who, Al-Haitham will note, was not any of those things at the time they were involved.
