“The chatter,” Arthur repeated and his mind flashed to all the kindness Merlin had received from other nobles. Dear God.

It hadn’t even been a week since they were fucking daily, stealing moments in St. James’s Palace between wedding prep and prepping Brimsley for this new role as the queen’s man opposite Reynolds himself as the king’s valet. However, the past four days somehow felt like four months and as they stood together on the stairs as Charlotte marched towards the observatory, Brimsley could feel ever inch between them.
He ached to close them all, and not just physically.
He hadn’t realized being Reynold’s counterpart would put them at war.
Had Reynolds known-that he was never leaving Kew, that night he held Brimsley as Brimsley prattled on about what the two months of a royal honeymoon meant for them?

Summary
Arthur meets Merlin’s eyes again. “My whole life, I have been groomed to be the Prince, the future King of Camelot. I have never had a father, I have only had a Sovereign to serve and appease.”
“That’s not true.” Merlin argues, though even he doesn’t sound convinced. “Your father loves you, even if he doesn’t show it.”
Memories from his past, of lectures and reprimands, words of advice and words spoken as orders, rise up. There had been anger and disappointment, stern severity and empty, false pride. Never affection, never softness. Not even when he was a child.
OR
After disappointing his father, Arthur is shipped off to Mercia to compete in a tournament, with the orders to bring back honour for the Pendragon name "or else". While there, away from his father's watchful eye, he allows himself to question a few things that have always been there in the back of his mind. These questions may just be the ticket to setting him free.
