Summary
After all the sacrifices he's made to get there and all the roles he's had to play, The Ghoul a.k.a. Cooper Howard has finally reached his destination after over 200 years of searching. Hunting through the halls of the management vault in Vegas, he finds his target, along with the last friend he betrayed--Lucy.

She remains silent for a while. Eventually, she tilts her head. “You…tried protecting me.” His eyes narrow. “Sorry. I know it’s stupid, but I—” She starts laughing, shaking her head. “Forget it.”
No. He doesn’t want to forget it. He wants to know every thought going through her head. Despite the short amount of time that they’ve been traveling together, she’s made quite the impact on him. Because of her, he’s been feeling things he hasn’t felt in decades. The desire to protect. To comfort. To…touch.
“I ain’t gonna let anyone hurt you,” he says. “That’s my job.”

“It is. Which is why I’m not ashamed of what I was doing.” Her fingers drum the edge of the bed. “What isn’t natural is walking into a room you know is occupied without knocking first.”
He can’t hold back the eyeroll this time. “It’s called an accident, Sweetheart. ‘Sides, I didn’t know. Ain’t like I can see through walls. So, how was I supposed to—?”
“By knocking.”
He huffs. “Well, ‘scuse me for not givin’ ya the luxury of a private room.”
She takes a deep breath. “You’re right. I’m sorry. This isn’t your fault. What has happened, happened.” She gets to her feet. “Can we drop it now?”
He hums. “Depends.”
“On?”
He tilts his head, debating if he should go through with this. “Who’s Cooper?” If he’s lucky, the risk will be worth the reward.

AKA, after accidentally walking in on lucy touching herself, it changes the dynamic of their so-called relationship. cooper likes to tell himself it's for the worse, but he knows it's for the better. then he slowly begins to realise lucy may actually prefer his company...except he can't let her get too close, lest it nearly kill him
