As the truck enters through the gate, and the door closes, he can't help but feel a sense of anxiety. This is- or... is supposed to be his first time ever venturing into the upside down. Now that he's here, he can't help but remember. Remember that he's keeping a secret from everyone. A secret that he hopes isn't still out there, watching, waiting. For him.
OR: Mike Wheeler has been stuck in the upside down for the past 4-5 years(?). Honestly he can't remember anymore. The real mike, that is. The fake or clone, as he liked to call him, has been living his life for him since after the possession of his best friend back in '84. Mike has spent so long just trying to find his way out of this hellhole. Now newly adorned with a patchwork of scars over his body. He's taller, lankier, just gaunter. His hair's grown out, all ragged and shaggy from the rip and tug at it over the years, same goes for his clothes. He's done his best to snag what he could find since he's grown so much. “Jonathan, it’s Mike,” Will says firmly. “Tell me what Nancy said.”“Okay, I just—I don’t really know how to tell you this.”
“Tell me what?”
Jonathan glances away from the road briefly to look at him. “They think he did it on purpose.”
His body knows before his mind does. The world turns on its axis. He feels like he’s going to be sick. He blinks rapidly, reaching out to grab the dashboard with one hand as he’s overcome with suffocating vertigo.
“Did what on purpose?”
“Jumped,” Jonathan says, careful and quiet. “The doctors think he jumped.”

Summary
Was…was Mike’s heart reacting to Will?
Mike isn’t looking at him. He’s staring hard at his cards as if he hasn’t seen them before, biting his inner cheek, and accentuating his dimple. As Will looks closer, he notices the pink shade spreading over the shell of Mike’s ear, the red emerging from the black curls like a rose sprouting from the earth.
Was Mike still nervous around him? Hadn’t they resolved that?
Will decides to test it. He leans onto the bed and rests a hand on Mike’s uninjured thigh, his thumb swiping side to side over the covers, and waits.
Mike's leg twitches into his hand, and barely a moment passes before the beeps speed up again, a rapid climb from steady to sprinting, and when Will looks, the blush has spread to Mike’s cheeks, his eyes unmoving and glued to his cards.
Oh. Will gapes at the monitor, the green spiking line. That's not discomfort.
Oh. He can have some fun with this.
Or: Mike, while protecting Will, gets attacked by a demogorgon. Guilt-ridden, Will stays with him in the hospital, forcing them to resolve the awkward air that has surrounded them for months, and, along the way, uncover some truths.

His fingers twitch along the trigger, his eyes scanning for anything that moves, a burning sensation curls over his chest, and suddenly it's hot all around him.

Will is living in Brooklyn, attending Pratt Institute and is happy as can be... almost. He can't seem to shake the feeling that something is missing. Though he's worked hard to move forward with his life, vague memories of what could've been haunt him more than he'd like to admit.
Mike never left Hawkins. His stories never seem to find a better ending than his own, and he has no one left. He was stupid to think anything would stay the way it was, even after everything. Of course everyone left. Everyone - except One.

As Mike walked through the kitchen to the table where his friends sat being served by his mother, Mike felt his eyes drift to the back wall of the room, and it was only took a moment for his feet stop in the middle of the kitchen.
There was no window.
For Mike’s entire life, there had been a window on that back wall. Placed centre with a frame either side of it and a curtain in whatever style his mother chose for the season covering it, a window has always been on that wall. Mike rarely ever took notice of it, as it was a feature of the house that was unimportant to him, but he had always known it was there.
Only now, it was gone.
- “Did you really think it would be that easy to find and stop me, Michael? I’m closer than you think. Writing this story was never under your control. You just gave me the blueprint.”

Grief is nothing but love upside down, a journey everyone has to finish to move on. Mike Wheeler is terrible at moving on. Yet still, he has to. Maybe he has not only one person to mourn. Maybe he should mourn himself first.

The thought is so vivid, so powerful, that he throws up.

Mike finally starts getting his life together again just before they're all ready to leave after getting all of his feelings out into his writing and he goes to will for help in finishing it. Together they paint and write a new ending for the story whilst rediscovering themselves along the way.
