He’s barely had the chance to consider grabbing the half-empty bottle of Jack on the counter, when there’s a knock at the door. He startles, slopping coffee on the floor, and cursing under his breath.
It’s embarrassing how quickly his heart leaps, how he gets a little soft and mushy about the fact that someone’s here to see him. There’s no way it’s some rando, he lives in the middle of nowhere and it’s Christmas.
He has to clear his throat and pace himself, hold back from rushing too eagerly to the door. Takes the time to put his mug down first, wipe the coffee off his hand, walk at a reasonable pace to the front door, and—
It’s Steve.

“I’m good, you know.” Billy says. His face is empty, expressionless, the way it was when Steve threw books at him and shouted, what do you mean you’re leaving? That’s it? We’re done?
Steve can do nothing but stare at Billy.
He wants to say, I’m not. I’m not and I never will be. You didn’t just break my heart Billy, you blew it up. It’s not lying on the floor ready to be put back together, it’s floating in microscopic dust in the motherfucking air.

Summary
A month has passed since the Gate closed, and the only thing Steve cares about is that the kids are happy and safe.
Steve does not care about his grades slipping, fear accompanying him every waking hour, and Billy trying to become friends with him. He doesn't care, he really doesn't. Until he does, and the world comes crashing down.
This fic is basically a mix of MumSteve, mental consequences of fighting monsters, and slowburn Billy flirting and Steve being too confused to notice

Summary
“You don’t believe me because you seriously think I’m too – I’m too good for you?” He manages to rasp out.
This whole time Steve’s been assuming it’s because Billy is emotionally and mentally sixteen right now. Because of his denial, his disgust and self-hatred, his terror at being found out as gay, his assumption that Neil Hargrove is around every corner.
Not this.
Billy crosses his arms again. “Yeah. I don’t believe you. You are way too out of my motherfucking league. I’m pretty sure Max just hired a model to fuck with me. Nobody looks that insane without getting paid for it. And you’re way too sweet, always caring ‘bout me and how I’m doing. You don’t even drop the act for a freaking second. Are you an actor as well?”
After an accident, Billy loses his memories. He’s in denial that he’s married to Steve, but not for the reason Steve assumes.
