Set in S3. John Carter is hospitalized with a bad case of pneumonia. Eleanor Carter arrives at County General to sit at his bedside. Her visit, however, is motivated not by love for her ailing son, but by something far more selfish. Peter Benton comes to realize that his student's family life is not just complicated, but in fact deeply troubling.
Eleanor Carter didn’t ask questions about how John was doing, about his prognosis, while Peter walked her to John’s room. She doesn’t reach out to him now, doesn’t hold his hand or comb his sweat-slick hair from his feverish forehead. She doesn’t soothe him with comforting, loving words.
She just… sits there. Expression wooden and disinterested. And her eyes keep looking at the door.

He lingers outside the door for only a moment, wincing, before making his way to admit and slinging his satchel onto the floor.
“Carter, I presume?” He gestures towards the bathroom door and Jerry nods.
