If it had only been his words, I suppose I would have managed; but the depravity of what he was asking of me, combined with that condescending air of knowing, that callous presumptuousness and amusement at my expense, infuriated me beyond rational thought.

Summary
He was always alive. The death was a trick—Bunny knows this now, but it feels like a resurrection all the same. Raffles’ passion is not just an artist’s passion but the passion of the Christ. Risen. Though nothing about him has changed, so maybe Bunny is the changed one. Maybe he needed Raffles to rise again so that his faith, his urgency, his priorities could be restored.

He was short with me barely even looking up from his paper, perhaps that's what did it. Being ignored like that again, feeling so insignificant, so unimportant. In that moment I think I would have said anything to get him to look at me, in fact I did.
"Is that why you don't appreciate my love A.J? Because you never had to steal it? Because I was easy, because I made the mistake of giving it freely?"

Raffles watches, and feels like he is falling, or perhaps like he is already at the pit of something, staring up at a pinprick of light. ‘You regrettably never really made me do the things I truly desired,” Bunny says then.
The parlor is quite suddenly too stuffy to bear, and Raffles gasps.
“What? What did you truly desire?” He asks, breath so tight in his throat it stings with each sharp inhalation.

Aughhhhh such an amazing read I had just finished one of the short stories before reading this and my gosh is it good, the style is amazing and the characterization of bunny is spot on!! I absolutely love raffles in this because while we don’t get his pov I think his love and desire for bunny is so clear.

I had never made any secret to Raffles of my adoration for him—that is, I had not said it outright, for that I knew would embarrass even him. Not that I expected him to show it, for in addition to an unflappable aplomb, he had kindlier instincts than he would ever admit to. But the most tactful rebuff in the world could not but pain me, and he would be sorry for it.
But he knew.
