Soulmates are a shinigami thing. To humans, the red string of fate is a fun story plot point or the focus of romantic dreams. It’s not a part of reality.
For shinigami, soulmates are a part of life. Not everyone gets one, but when you face off against another shinigami with a zanpakutou, there’s a specific feeling of resonance from the clash that just screams this is my other half. And for Kisuke, the first time he faced Ichigo, the boys incomplete zanpakutou in hand, and they clashed, he’d felt it ring true in his soul.

Summary
Sometimes sad, or even hopeful endings need to be fixed. I tried to do that with the first part. Then the brain took a run with a different concept (and brought back a second character) for part two. I was going to leave it at that, but apparently the brain wasn't done with it and part 3 was born. With yet another character being reborn. Or brought back. Same difference.
So yes. Post canon-fix it! Or mess-up, I suppose, depending on your preference.
