Ptolemy scoffs, kicking lightly at the dirt. “Guess who has the extraordinary pleasure of being assigned the babysitting duty to the dumbass trio over here?” He rolls his eyes with a sharp sigh. “Not Peucesta, clearly. Lucky bastard.”
“Don’t lump me in with them,” Hephaestion protests. Ridiculous. Everyone knows who instigates the fights just as often as Phainon and Mydei.
“We don’t need babysitting,” Phainon says at the same time, words muffled as Mydei’s hand smashes his head into the ground, resuming their fight now that Ptolemy is distracted. Phainon almost bites down on the dirt by accident.

The bed was empty, sans Little Ica munching on some fabric. Her jaw dropped. Did Little Ica actually eat Phainon and Mydei? But Mydei was too bony! He would get a stomachache!
Wait a minute.
"Oh no!" Hyacine wailed. "Little Ica ate the kids!"

He turns to Mydei, letting a gentle smile curve on his lips. Mydei’s eyes narrow to slits.
“Hello there,” Phainon greets softly. He crouches down, inching closer. Mydei doesn’t budge, only tenses like a tightly coiled spring. “My name is Phainon. You’re Mydeimos, right?”
Mydei doesn’t respond, lips pressed tightly shut. Phainon’s smile wavers, chest squeezing tight.
“No one’s going to hurt you here,” he murmurs, extending his arm out. Mydei growls. Fear flashes through his eyes for a fleeting second, but it’s enough to have Phainon freezing in place, breath catching in his throat.
(A mishap at the Abyss of Fate leaves Mydei a child whose only memories are of the Sea of Souls.)

Summary
It takes him a moment of confusion before he remembers exactly why he is holding a letter from the past.
“It’s a time capsule,” Mydei says simply, almost amusedly. “It was a project by one of our teachers then, and she promised she’d send it to us after ten years.” He picks up the letter and flips it, curiosity getting the best of him as he prepares to open the envelope. “I can’t believe she actually remembered.”
“You’re that old already?” Caelus jokes.
But the jest flies over Mydei’s head. In fact, it never lands with him at all. As soon as he picks up the time capsule of a letter addressed to himself by himself, he sees the last envelope hidden right underneath it.
For Mydei, it reads, in a handwriting that Mydei recognizes–still recognizes, even after all this time. From Phainon, of ten years ago ☺︎

“Mydei, your head!” exclaims Phainon at the same time.
Mydei’s hands shoot up to the top of his head, expecting to find it cleaved in half or something based on the reaction. Instead, all he finds are two pointy triangles, soft and sensitive to the touch.
Phainon slowly backs up. As he does, Mydei looks down, almost dreading what he might see.
A furry tail, narrower and a bit longer than Phainon’s, flicks to the side.
“Hks.”
In which Phainon and Mydei discover the consequences of poking around in Anaxa's lab without permission, and gain a few fluffy characteristics in the process.

In his youth, Duke Khaslana turns down the affection of the Crown Prince of Kremnos, Mydei, with the weight of his duchy and societal norms on his back and in his adulthood, he chases after him with missed summers’ worth of kisses and touches weighing on him.
Will he somehow manage to earn back the prince’s affection or is the sun never destined to rise within Mydei’s heart ever again?

You keep me sane. You inspire me to be better for myself and for you. You make me a better man because you are so incredible yourself.”
“I love you,” he says, finishing his speech, “and I want you. I want to have you, for as long as you will want me. And because I know you, I hope, that means that you want me forever, too.”
“I love you,” Mydei replies, “with all the words I know and do not know how to say. With all the time we have spent and will spend together. I love you, and I don’t think anything could ever change that.”
