Andrea pushed open the door with her shoulder, trying not to make a sound as the hinges gave their usual groan. The air in their little space smelled faintly of oil and smoke—leftover from the air outside—and something sweeter, the lavender sprigs Frankie insisted on keeping above the window. She almost smiled at that. Francesca was always insisting on soft touches in a world that wanted to grind softness into dust.
Frankie was asleep already, curled into the thin blanket, dark hair fanned against the pillow like ink spilled across parchment. She looked so still, so untouched by the day’s chaos. Andrea froze in the doorway for a long moment, just watching. There was always something sacred about seeing Frankie like this, stripped of armor and laughter, breathing steadily as though the world couldn’t touch her.
Andrea’s chest tightened, and for once it wasn’t only because of the ache she’d been ignoring all day. She pressed the back of her hand to her mouth, muffling the cough that clawed its way up her throat. Her whole body shook with it, a tremor she couldn’t control. When it finally subsided, she pulled her hand away and saw the smear of blue-gray at the edge of her palm.
Her stomach dropped.

It wasn’t that Arlo had been disappointed, initially, when Auggie had appeared with a request for a bath.
Not really. In fact Auggie having the courage and vulnerability to show up at her room and request to bathe there made something inside her chest creak open a little. Much like it had when he’d introduced himself with a nervous loosening of his smudged collar. Or when he’d looked at her with open awe in his eyes when she’d said he’d done well, their first assignment.
Or when he’d tried, admirably, to step in when she was being unceremoniously removed from the art gallery.
In fact, if she didn’t recognise exactly what she was feeling, she’d be quite concerned she had an unfortunate heart ailment.

He tensed as the man laid a hand on his shoulder. A familiar gesture. The pain that followed was just as familiar as his uncle squeezed. Hard.
“I will not accept your failure again, Hunter. Do not mistake my mercy for forgiveness.”
