Lena is on her fifth sleepless night in a row when her dear friend Jess suggests she visit a doctor for her troubles. Her suggestion is given slyly, a smirk painted on Jess’s face. This smirk has not always ended well for Lena, but she is desperate, overcome with shocking thoughts and tossing and turning, and so she accepts a recommendation: a Dr. Danvers, of Marylebone.
This moment is one she will spend her life looking back on, at times rueing and others thanking a giving and kind God for.

Summary
After ten years in Stillwater for a crime she didn't commit, Vi breaks herself out and goes home. Her homecoming doesn't go like she thought it would.
Two years later, she's out of control and out on the streets. She's now a champion pitfighter, a raging alcoholic, and completely on her own. Despite her family's best (and desperate) efforts to help, Vi's on a one-way track to ending up either dead or back in prison.
At the same time, Caitlyn arrives in the undercity to collect data and information for her thesis. She starts her research from a local bar called The Last Drop, which puts her right into Vi's path. Vi might have been out of her family's home for years, but she's still not going to let a topsider put them in danger.
Canon divergence (everyone lives!), enemies to lovers (barely, the lovers aspect happens fast), angst, trauma, addiction, and also fluff and humour (because these things can co-exist!)

Caitlyn is a coffee-loving PhD student at the nearby university who spends every weekday working from her favorite table at The Last Drop. Despite an obvious attraction, the two women are immediately at odds with each other the moment their paths cross. Over time, they'll navigate past their differences and form a unique arrangement.
This is an enemies to friends with benefits to lovers arc set in a modern coffee shop/café AU. I am writing it specifically at the request of my wife, who has a thing for barista-centric fanfics and loves Caitlyn/Vi. Chapter titles are quotes from Arcane.

“Caitlyn.”
“Oh,” Jinx says knowingly, glancing Vi’s way out of the corner of her eye. “That’s the, uh, the cop girl, right? Maddie’s ex?”
A chorus of mutters and nods is the response.
“I’m being warned about her,” Vi tells her sister and Jinx blows her bangs out of her face.
“Good,” she says, almost snappishly. “Yeah, don’t date cop girl. You should date someone cool.”
“I’m not going to date anyone, not for a while. I need to get back on my feet first,” says Vi, drumming her fingers against the condensation of the glass. Thinking of Cupcake in her contacts, and that teasing smile.
Everything in Vi’s life right now is starting over. She’s spending the holidays on her sister’s pull-out futon, trying to make sense of the avalanche of changes, salvage what’s left of her family and figure out what she’s going to do next. The last thing she expects to do is include the beautiful woman she runs into on her first day in town, or this Caitlyn that everyone’s warning her to stay away from.

“Change of plans,” Caitlyn says, stepping further into the light from the window.
“Change of plans,” Vi echoes, a beat too late to be casual, judging by the twist of Caitlyn’s lips, the unimpressed arch of her brow. Vi shifts again, plucking the hem of her shirt between two fingers and shaking it out to cool herself off. She needs to wipe that smug, knowing look of Caitlyn’s face — give as good as she gets. Or at least make an effort. Vi puts a bit of lazy confidence in her own voice, leaning back and stretching in a way she knows will make her loose cut-up muscle shirt ride up her abs, subtly flexing her arms as she raises them over her head to emphasize their bulk and definition. “Something wrong? Or did you just miss me too much to wait a few more hours?”

She can hear her boots’ heavy tread on the parquet, but she also feels Vi’s peculiar, disquieting energy pricking at the back of her neck. She has an excited feeling in her chest. If she doesn’t consciously slow her pace, she might break into a frantic run, like a rabbit.
It’s not the way another vampire feels. When another vampire is in her presence, they make a negative space, a hole in the atmosphere, that emanates a lightless, vanta black of energy, so black it sucks in the color around it. They smell of cold soil and old blood.
Vi feels and smells urgently, viciously alive. It feels like being followed by some prehistoric predator that’s burned through its permafrost out of sheer rage. Alive, yet somehow with teeth, like Caitlyn’s. And now Caitlyn is leading the predator deeper into her house.

Caitlyn returns to Piltover after three centuries held captive in Ambessa Medarda's coven. She's hoping to remember the human life she lived there, but instead becomes consumed with answering some new questions, such as: who and what is Vi? And why is she working as Caitlyn's groundskeeper?

“Maybe there is no other side,” Vi said. “Maybe it’s all one thing.”
