He's not Harry's father, because they look nothing alike, and everyone always tells Harry that he looks like James. The man in the mirror looks nice. Cool, that's the word. He looks like he could beat Malfoy in a midnight duel instead of having to rely on punching him. He looks like he could out-dress both Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon without even trying. And especially, he looks like he wouldn't care that Harry is the Boy-Who-Lived or fawn over him.

Harry has never been good with words. Not like Hermione, who can write multi-page essays with barely a glance at a textbook. Even when his content is adequate, sometimes his spelling isn’t or his handwriting is a mess. Snape is the worst about it, but sometimes even McGonagall is harsh.
It stands to reason that Harry shouldn’t write in T. M. Riddle’s diary.
He does so anyway.

They’re conservative and bigoted, with a spoiled son and a house that’s too clean. But he knows he could never work with them when he hears a muffled sound from under the stairs. He glances into the door and sees a tiny boy curled up and sobbing.
Now he just has to convince the Dursleys to give him the boy - the one they obviously don’t care about - without brutally maiming them.

Bellatrix's torture goes wrong and Harry is transformed into a snake, doused in experimental potions, and accidentally banished through time by a spell that latches onto the Horcrux in his scar. He lands in 1943, broken and helpless, directly in the path of a lonely sixteen-year-old Tom Riddle.
Tom finds an unusual snake in the Forbidden Forest and can't resist taking it in. Harry, too traumatized to fight back and too terrified to reveal the truth, has no choice but to accept care from the boy who will become Voldemort.
As they bond, Harry realizes he sees more of himself in Tom than he'd like to admit.
