Summary
Plato proposed that humans were once beings with four arms, four legs, and two faces. Peace reigned, until the god Zeus came to be jealous of humanity, condemning each soul to walk the earth in search of its other half. Many people upon hearing this, think it romantic. These people are, frankly, terminally closed-minded.
--
Upon his return in The Empty House, Holmes reflects on his view of soul-mates. -

Summary
Holmes frowned, and I realised I’d made a mistake. Evidently he wasn’t lucid enough for metaphor.
“What on earth do you need a small yellow songbird for?” he asked thickly.
--
Holmes stumbles home without his hat, dropping his keys on the mat. Watson is instantly concerned, and his worry only grows when Holmes starts to go quiet. -

Summary
“You’ve got yourself an admirer, old chap,” I said, nodding across to the young constable watching Holmes intently with a pencil at the ready.
--
Recently when working with Scotland Yard, a particular young constable has been hanging on Holmes's every word. Watson thinks the attention is getting to his ego. -

Summary
Watson, Holmes had discovered, had a secret love of elephants. It was not a deliberately kept secret, and likely it would be common knowledge to one who had known him his entire life, from childhood, that John Watson loves elephants, but meeting him as an adult, it had not had a chance to come up. Since it had come up, however, in a rambling, sentimental state of intoxication after an evening out with old soldier friends, Holmes saw elephants everywhere.

Summary
Holmes cut me off wonderfully with a kiss, and I clung eagerly to his lips, falling back breathlessly into the pillows when finally he let me go.
“I’m sorry,” he purred, a sinful glimmer in his eyes. “What was it you were saying?”
--
Watson once noted that Holmes was 'as sensitive to flattery on the score of his art as any girl could be of her beauty'. As it turns out, the great detective is just as sensitive to compliments to his own beauty as his art. -

Summary
I don’t know why it was I had stopped in front of the basin, staring at myself in the mirror with my arms crossed. I don't know why I had neglected to properly close the bathroom door, nor what possessed Holmes to slip into the room and stand with his long, slender hands upon each side of the basin, placing his lithe form scandalously close behind me. He peered at the reflection of my face in the mirror, studying my eyes, tracing my features, examining me thoroughly, and, I am sure, completely aware of the dastardly effect he had on my heart-rate as his breath grazed my shoulder.
--
Watson loses his train of thought while in the bathroom preparing for bed. Holmes makes him glad he did. -

It was not comforting to me to know that, should Holmes come to lose his life by some act of misadventure, I should be one of the first informed.

Summary
Mycroft was not really reading the newspaper. More than anything, it was a cover to track the incessant comings and goings from the room without anyone noticing what he was actually doing. Sherlock was arguably doing similar beside him, but he did not have a newspaper or indeed any object in hand, nor was he watching the tide of police officers. In fact, his eyes were fixed on one man in particular.
“Brother,” he said in a low voice, “if you will insist on staring at the doctor's backside--”
--
Waiting to be useful at the scene of a murder, Mycroft is stunned by his little brother's audacity in what he chooses to occupy himself with. -

“Yes, lots I suppose, but these puzzles make me forget nearly every word I know.”
“Ocean took us an hour last night," Holmes said.
“It did, and then Mrs Hudson got it in five seconds.”

-

I have more than enough confidence to assert that a hungry Watson will make statements that sated he would not dare.

Summary
She gave Mr Holmes as much time as he would need to reach the landing before creeping herself into the corridor and peering upwards. He was carrying something that looked suspiciously like a cage. What in hell had he brought home now?

Summary
Holmes brought his hand into position over the dish, adjusted his footing, and-- Hic! His breath hitched at the sharp, unexpected sound, and two drops hit the glass.
Watson groaned, “Sorry. I’ll go upstairs.”
--
Holmes very much prefers not to be distracted while performing experiments. Some distractions cannot be avoided however.
