Summary
Just west of the town Porthgwarra, Cornwall, Robert Singer’s farm lies, a mess of ravaged land gaping out onto a fretting sea. Cas's love for Dean ends up getting him out of The Empty much to The Shadow's chagrin. Unfortunately, he's now stuck in the interdimensional fabric of the cosmos where even Jack can't see him. With Cas MIA for a year, Dean's had time to hit rock bottom and climb up out of it again.
When Dean's soul plays beacon to Cas, leading him back home, it will take some doing to get them good and reunited.
There's also the matter of the love nuke Cas accidentally set off in The Empty. But that's Jack's problem.

“D’ya ever think about just running away?” Dean hears himself ask. And this is why he doesn’t smoke weed. It’s also why he doesn’t hang out with Cas past midnight. Like Cinderella, he becomes a little too much himself this time of night.
“Alright. You’re cut off.” Cas plucks the joint back, holds it to his lips, breathes in deep. He doesn’t cough when he exhales sweet smoke. And like magic, Dean is back to thinking this might be one of the best nights of his life.
“Why?” Dean insists, leaning forward to make a grab for the joint. He’s far from quick enough, but he’s rewarded when Cas holds one hand far from reach while the other wraps around his wrist.
Even when Dean relaxes his hand, Cas doesn’t let go. It leaves Dean leaning forward awkwardly, not quite close enough to be properly in Cas’ space, but close enough that he doesn’t have it in him to pull away.
“Because you get maudlin when you smoke too much.”

It was during a time in his life when everything felt like it was in turmoil (long before he even really knew what his life being in turmoil truly meant). He never intended to go out and get any piercings—his father would have never allowed it. For 20-something years it had been his best-kept secret… that was until one fateful night when a hunt went wrong and his best friend had to swoop in and help patch him up, catching an eyeful of his elusive secret.
Castiel’s infatuation with his best friend took a dangerous turn that night (not that he wasn’t already treading treacherous waters with his feelings towards the man). He had already known that Dean had a piercing, but he had no idea it was still functional, and equally had no idea that a piece of jewellery, Dean’s own slice of quiet rebellion, would have such a profound effect on him. Now Castiel can’t help but want him and his fading grace is doing very little in hiding his… indiscretions. The idea of it slowly drove him insane.
And what makes it worse… Castiel was certain Dean was doing it on purpose.
