Summary
There are no monsters, mutants, or war. Robots do not stand as gladiators against the test of Man. Warriors do not drift together - close in thought and will and action.
There’s just a hole in the desert. And it grows.

Hermann knows that Newton is attractive, and he knows he should not be surprised that other people find Newton attractive, too.
This does not stop him from nearly walking straight into a wall when he overhears a handful of his Physics 101 students call Dr. Geiszler a 'DILF' in the hallway.

Summary
Newt's 15 when his mark shows up. He can't read it. It doesn't even look like words. He calls his dad and lets out some weak joke that his soulmate's a fucking alien.
Hermann's mark doesn't show up until he's 20 and finally content with the idea that he doesn't have a soulmate. That doesn't stop him from wondering if Newt is short for something or if his soulmate is actually an amphibian.

“Eddie,” Maddie says. “I know our kids are different ages, and our situations are different, but — it kind of sounds like you need something else besides your kid and work, too.”
Well, I used to have a best friend, Eddie thinks, then pushes the thought away. “I … I have other things. But Chris and the job are definitely the most central right now.”
"You know, you can’t put yourself last all the time, Eddie.” She laughs a little. “Straight from my therapist’s mouth to your ears! Ooh — you know what? I’ve got a great idea.”
“Oh?”
“You should come to book club. It’s something I do with my parent friends. We take turns hosting, and it’s my turn!”
Sometimes the best part about reading is getting to learn more about yourself.

“I gotta be dreaming.”
Buck pinches him. Hard.
“Jesus Christ, Buck.”
“See? Not dreaming.”
Eddie sends him an irritated, wary look, but Buck is getting kind of amped up, so he starts pacing around with his hands on his head.
“Okay, we’re—we’re stuck in a fucking time loop. Both of us. Um, what if it’s like. What’s that movie called? Groundhog Day! Where we have to learn to be better people. Or like a fucking. Uh. A Christmas Carol.”
“A Christmas Carol isn’t about a time loop,” Eddie adds unhelpfully.
“Okay, b-but some fantastical shit happens and they have to be better.” Buck gasps. “Oh my God, Eddie. What if we’re terrible people?”
Buck and Eddie start living the same day over and over again.

“Chim?” Buck yells loud enough that it bounces off a few cars. “Chim, like, Chimney? You have a crush on… Chimney? As in my sister’s husband?”
Eddie recoils, startled. “I thought you said you knew?”
“I… I…” Buck isn’t sure what to say. This changes everything—the entire day rewrites itself, and he sees every single fucking interaction: Eddie fawning over Chimney in the gym. The counter. The calls.
It was never about Buck.
“He’s fucking married, Eddie.”
OR
Eddie's got a crush, and Buck's handling it as expected.

Summary
Eddie’s fingers dig into his own arms. Athena wants to tell him to quit it or he’ll bruise. She wants- to walk away. She wants this to be someone else’s problem, family, life.
“There were boxes in his car, Eddie. Clothes. Books, and-” she had helped him pack, they all had. Made a little party of it, Buck’s new apartment, the Diazes back in their rightful home, everything as it should be as much as it ever can be again. She’d looked in the back seat and saw a box with her own handwriting. Kitchen.
“What are you-”
“He was sleeping in his car?” Maddie’s always been smart.

“You think we should have sex?” Eddie clarified — still in that slow, deliberate tone, like any sudden movement would cause the ceiling to cave in around them.
Buck rolled his eyes. “I mean…not for real.”
“Okay. So you think we should have fake sex."
“Yeah, like reading Our Bodies, Ourselves isn’t the same as watching porn, right? It’d be educational sex.”
“Well if it’s educational sex...”
Or: Buck learns that Eddie's never had a prostate orgasm. Clipboard sex ensues.

Summary
“You were drunk. I know it didn’t mean anything. Everything’s alright.”
Buck visibly winces. “That’s not — Eddie.”
There’s a suspended moment where Buck looks torn, standing on the edge of something, eyes fixed on the horizon to avoid looking at the drop, the precipitous canyon below. But then Buck, who can’t lie, who would tear his own chest open to a complete stranger on the street because the truth of him spills so loudly out of every jagged edge, sighs out:
“It meant something.”
There’s a ringing sound somewhere in the distance, getting closer. “What are you…” Eddie trails off.
“I wasn’t — well, I was drunk. But that wasn’t what. Wasn’t why. Not entirely, or — god.” Buck shudders in a breath, steeling himself. “I have feelings for you.” He closes his eyes. “I’m so sorry.”
~
Buck confesses his feelings. Eddie’s straight. If he spends all his time thinking about Buck and looking at Buck and wanting to be around Buck, well, that’s just being a good friend, isn’t it? He’s being so normal about this, actually.

Summary
There's a part of Eddie that's tempted to do something insane, something that'll absolutely fuck up this Eddie's day, if he's a real person with a real life that Eddie is just borrowing for the time being, and not an elaborate figment of his own subconscious. Something like hopping on a plane to Los Angeles, tracking down whatever version of Buck lives there now, seeing what happens.
He wants to know if Buck would smile at him again, without the weight of history between them. If maybe, in a different world, he'd want Eddie.
Or: in the aftermath of a deadly car accident, Eddie finds himself able to visit other lives he could have lived: other worlds, other possibilities, and maybe - just maybe - a chance to get things right.

Summary
Don and Kathy would move in together. They would have a dog or two and then inevitably, a small parade of adorable little brats who would call him Uncle Cosmo, and they would spend less and less time with him, not on purpose but busy with the rest of their lives, and ultimately Cosmo would learn to make his peace with it because he’d have no other choice and he would have to try to move on and not live too much in his memories. He could picture it so clearly, he figured if the songwriting gig with Monumental didn’t pan out, he could always return to the backwater circuit with a new act: The Amazing Cosmo of the Cosmos—ladies and gentlemen, he sees the future, he reads the stars, he silently pines for his best married pal and all the while tap dancing!
Don and Kathy inviting him along on their honeymoon, though—that part was a surprise.

Summary
“I mean,” Eddie backtracks hastily, “that I probably don’t—uh, that I don’t want a hook up. Just the single, uh, kiss. For research.”
“Right,” Buck nods. “For research.”
They turn back to the TV, sipping beers and spooning dessert, room quiet save for the telenovela playing. Buck, gun to his head, could not tell you who or what is on the screen right now. The brave, strong part of his brain has surrendered shamefully, white flag hoisted while the rest of his brain—stupid, stupid—hosts a skillfully imagined supercut of his best friend kissing men. It’s surprisingly new subject matter for him. What’s unsurprising is his distaste for every conjured scenario, discarding each indistinguishable stranger until the reel buffers on something more… familiar.
“Well—”
Eddie waits a patient minute for Buck to continue before asking, “Well, what?”
“I just mean—if it’s just a kiss, right.” Buck pauses. “You could, uh. You could try it with me.”
or, buck thinks kissing men and women feels pretty much the same. eddie’s not buying it. sometimes settling a bet requires kissing your best friend, a lot, for research

Summary
“We were friends in high school,” Eddie says, and the words seem to warp in his mouth with how much he’s not saying. “We had a fight, then Shannon got pregnant and we stopped talking. It’s the first time I’ve seen him in years. Probably the last time I'll see him in my life. Okay?”
“Eddie, I don’t know what you think ‘friends’ means, but that was not friendship I saw.”
*
In which Eddie keeps secrets and Buck is incredibly normal and rational and even brave about his reaction to this.

Summary
Buck kissed him. It didn’t feel like a declaration the way kisses usually do. It didn’t feel stifling. It felt like a plea. It felt like exactly what he said, like don’t go. Buck is still getting over Tommy, and Eddie is straight, and the two of them—it’s easy between the two of them.
The engine roars and Buck turns to look at him, eyebrows raised as if asking if he’s ready. Eddie nods, swallows, and puts his head back. Buck kissed him, and they won’t talk about it, and Eddie’s fine with that because really, Buck’s the only thing that’s ever been easy for Eddie.

or Buck kisses Eddie in LA. Eddie kisses Buck in El Paso. They figure out what that means somewhere along the way to bringing Chris back home.
