In the end, Penny had simply blurted out the words one evening after a debriefing, while walking Ruby back towards the dorm she and her team had commandeered. All of her feelings, all of the half-thought-out speeches she had imagined, it all came tumbling out of her in a rush of emotion, until Ruby cut off her rambling declarations by tackling her in a hug.
The way Ruby had smiled at her that evening as she said she felt the same way was the most amazing smile Penny had ever seen, and it was an image that she would cherish for as long as she existed.
The present sight of her girlfriend shivering and hugging herself was a little more concerning, though.
