Her staff was raised, before she hesitated. Did she have to check up on Fount? She could just leave that alone, and come back to it when she could.

No, what was she thinking? Of course she had to visit them. It had been ages since she last saw them, and she was technically their mother. Of course she had to go.

Fount of Knowledge, wherever you may be, She thought. I will come.

Silent Salt stilled. Eyecings fall to the cookie's chest, frantically searching and unable to find what he was looking for.

What Salt disregarded as a false soul gem, like their own in the sword, was actually real. They look up and here it was, proudly placed on the intricate golden headpiece. The soul gem lights up brighter in answer.

This is not Burning Spice but Herald of Change.

What could have been, oh dear, what it could have been.

We started off so well, but I never gathered the confidence to tell you who I was.

I hid behind letters of love, too afraid to show myself.

I watched you fall along with the others.

Oh, what could we have been?

    Summary

It has been shown, in some studies, that traumas experienced by the ancestors of an organism can have tangible effect on the later life, biology, and psychology of the child. As prey knows its predators by instinct, the experiences of those who came before you weave their way into instinct, guiding their descendants even when the threat may no longer exist.

Instincts exist to drive primal fear in response to predators that have long since gone extinct. Those whose ancestors survived famine store fat with more efficiency, storing energy for a food shortage that may never happen. Mice who have learned to expect shocks at the smell of cherry blossom give birth to children that show aversion to that same smell, even without having experienced shocks themselves.

When your ancestors' survival relied on remaining unknown even to those closest to them, what does that pass on to you?
