Jake refuses to believe Dirk is dead. He can't be! That just... doesn't make any sense! He *has* to fix it.
And... he does! Almost.
The funny thing about Hope is that it doesn't always do what you want, and sometimes instead of your recently-deceased ex, you get a formerly robotic but currently all too human replica of his teenage self - and things only get worse from there.

"Who are you trying to find?" he asks casually, quickly folding his wing in to avoid hitting a passing woman. "Y'know where they live? It might be easier than hitting up the cops." He blinks, blank eyes widening in alarm as he adds, "Unless they're a criminal? Shit, what did they do?"
"He doesn't live here." It's said with that same careful neutrality, Dirk trying to hide the intensity of his emotions. "He's not a criminal either. I was trying to find him but..." he doesn't exist in any way I can find him. He's right behind me and doesn't remember anything. He's dead.
Dirk doesn't say any of that, just shakes his head and leads them back to his apartment.
"...Do you want to hear a story? It's one written for the boy I'm trying to find."

You've got a program queued to send the messages you can't bring yourself to say in ten minutes time, and your sword's laying on your desk next to a note (part gift for Dave, part removing temptation - you can't do that to them. They've already seen enough of your blood spilled).
Guess that's it, then. You're going out the way you always thought you would - still stuck in a shitty apartment, even after everything.
(You can't help but wonder if the force of your fall will be enough to decapitate you for the last time. Comedy comes in threes, right?)
