    "Shane Hollander is retiring."

Ilya rolled over to look at his wife, next to him in bed in one of his old Boston t-shirts. She was staring at her phone, scrolling rapidly.

"What do you mean, Hollander is retiring?" Ilya felt strangely winded. He had hardly seen Hollander outside the rink in more than a decade, but he found himself unable to imagine playing hockey without him.

He thought back to the last time he'd seen — really seen — Hollander. Hollander had Ilya's cock in his mouth. Ilya could still remember the blend of annoyance and need on Hollander's face, the tears in the corner of his eyes. Ilya had wanted to dominate him, to take him apart, to wreck him and then put him back —

    Svetlana interrupted the memory.

Or: Ilya and Shane stopped seeing each other before the Sochi Olympics. When Ilya hears Shane is retiring, he decides it's finally time to reconnect.

The universe made a great joke. Shane hoped that whoever was in charge of destiny enjoyed the show.

Out of all people, of course his soulmate had to be his arch-rival.

Wiebe could tell he was wearing Ilya down, but he still looked nervous. "Ilya," Ilya stilled. To his team he was always Rozanov or Roz or Rozy, never Ilya. "You're our guy. There's nobody I'd rather be our captain, to lead this team to another Stanley Cup. It's clear you don't like the guy, but we both know how good this could be."

Ilya jerked his head in a nod. "We will destroy everyone, this is true." Wiebe seemed satisfied. Ilya stood to leave and delivered one last look at Wiebe "But I do not have to be happy about it."

"I'm calling it 'Adopt a Stray,'" Cliff announced, pacing the rug. "Tomorrow night. Boston vs. Montreal. We announce a new 'tradition.' We say that Boston has noticed that not every team is as close as ours. We say we’re looking for 'strays'—players who aren’t really accepted by their team, always seem an outcast, that need a little extra team bonding or whatever. And the first 'stray' we’re adopting? Is Shane Hollander."

    Summary

Shane likes where he works. He likes the people well enough, even if sometimes it feels like he’s working with a spooked horse when he’s at the ashes desk, it’s good work. His best friend Rose, who works at the front desk had recommended him the job and he had applied and gotten it almost immediately. That was a few months ago, almost nine, he realized after a few too many drinks with her one night, and he has only felt himself assimilate more and more into the workplace culture as time has gone on.

It’s all pretty dark, considering what they deal with. Dark humor to deal with a dark workplace.
