Summary
Growing up under the subjugation of Robotnik’s steel dystopia, you have to get your freedom however you can. For Sonic the Hedgehog? It’s through his music and traveling what’s left of the world outside of the Robotnik Republic’s reach. With his siblings, Sonia and Manic, they’ve formed a rock band called “The Underground” and tour the territories still on the fringes of freedom.
One day, their van breaks down near an outpost in the middle of nowhere, where the triplets are approached by a two-tailed fox kit who claims he can help them fix it. All he needs are a few parts and a lift to the next town. As they learn more about this strange kid and where he came from, Sonic, Sonia, and Manic find themselves as targets of Robotnik in his attempts to catch the fox and claim the technology he’s been working on for himself.
The technology in question? A way to travel between realities.

At one point, Tails and Knuckles used the Chaos Emeralds alongside Sonic to go super. They don't really do that anymore. Though if Sonic has anything to say about it, they won't ever again.

It was nice having someone finally understand them without needing words. They didn’t even know that the other could talk, in their opinion. They hadn’t needed to talk at all.

Even if nobody else sees it just yet, he does and it makes his stomach churn — a hungry void gnaws at his guts and it makes him shudder when he thinks of all the evidence. Of the scene of the crime. One that disappeared before anyone else had the chance to see it.

“Tails! Watch out for the mountain!”
The fox squinted and tried to see past the swarm that was crowding around him. He immediately went to steer the plane away but couldn’t. He felt his body tense before it started to spasm and then the pain of electricity hit him.
One of the badniks electrocuted the Tornado and by extension the fox seated in the pilot seat.
Tails wasn’t aware of his loud, pained screech that echoed out of the plane as it shut down entirely and continued on its path towards the mountain. But he did hear the loud panicked calls of his name from both Sonic and Knuckles.

Of course, it wouldn't be quite so easy without the support from his friends. His world couldn't be entirely broken as long as he had them by his side. Likewise, Tails is adjusting to using more of his tech in the field, still trying his best to keep up with Sonic, and keep him safe as the dark energy Eggman unlocked threatens all they hold dear.
