Summary
"I think there's something wrong with me," Adora tells Bow. "It's like my brain forgets where I am. Or when I am."
Bow eases a bolt out of place. "We're all adjusting. George says battle fatigue can stay with you for a while."
"It's not about the war." Adora's wrench keeps slipping. "It's - from before that."

Summary
Light flickers at the top of the stairs, and it only takes a moment for the outline to solidify. "Hey Adora," Catra says, as if nothing's wrong. "What'd they think?"
"They thought the place was haunted," Adora snaps. "For some reason."
Catra slides down the banister, leaping off the end to float next to Adora. She only has to be a couple inches off the ground to be eye-to-eye. Her smile is infuriating. "You say that like it's a bad thing."

Summary
The closest thing to reality is her mission. When Adora focuses on that, the sword doesn't threaten to glitch out of her hands.
Adora kneels before the Queen of Bright Moon, and when she speaks, it doesn't sound like her life has fallen apart in the last twelve hours. It's easy to do insane things when nothing's real.

Summary
"That's cool," Adora says, and means it. "You never told me."
"Yeah, well. It was never going to happen." Catra glances at Adora before rolling her eyes. "No one wants a baker that can't taste sugar." She picks up a jar full of brown. "Whatever. Forget it. Was Razz allergic to labels?"

Summary
The visitor comes back over and over again, and one day she sits outside the cell bars, long past any time she'd stayed before. "Maybe it's stupid to pretend you're a person," the visitor says, "but I'm going to anyway."
The creature that used to be a sword holds that thought to its chest when it lays down to sleep. It doesn't know why that makes it feel so warm.

Summary
"Why did you like it?" Adora's eyes look paler than usual. "The raid."
Because the captain can't follow through on her threats to put Catra through the airlock if she's useful. Because she's trained to do this for years, even when only Adora thought she could, and now she can prove everyone else wrong. Because when she's standing over someone foolish enough to get within her reach, the blood on her hands isn't her own.
"Because it was fun," Catra whispers back. "Why didn't you?"

Summary
They're doing homework on their respective beds, three days into the semester, when Adora says, "I'm taking the class."
Catra squints and tries to remember which of the business courses, with names so boring that Catra barely remembers them, Adora could be talking about. "Marketing Analysis?"
"No," Adora says, smile spilling onto her face, "Visual Storytelling."

Summary
The fiend isn't the Catra that drew in the margins of Adora's notebooks, or threw snowballs while they were waiting for the bus, or came down to Adora's bunk when it was too cold and quiet to sleep alone.
This isn't not her, either.

Summary
Catra folds slow and careful, and by the time Ms. Torres helps her bloom out the crane's wings, her heart beats quiet.
"I love it," Ms. Torres tells her, and it has to be a lie like it always is. Catra wants to believe it anyway.

It's their troupe's first night performing this piece, but Catra and Adora needed no work to get into character. They just needed to stop acting.

Summary
For the first weeks after the accident, Catra lives at her roommate's bedside, waiting for Adora to wake up. The doctors were optimistic at the beginning. When that changes, they make Catra go home.
If only things would stay where Catra puts them, and the radiators would work.

Summary
Catra loves caves. After days of noise and bright lights that drill into her head, she loves the quiet darkness that accepts her in a way that the world aboveground, where people reach for her ears without asking and conversations with her girlfriend get increasingly difficult, never has.
When something bursts out of an underground lake, sharp teeth flashing, long-nailed fingers grasping for her ankle, Catra should stay away. But she's drawn back, again and again, to the creature whose glowing blue eyes linger in Catra's mind long after she's packed away her climbing ropes.

Summary
Adora doesn't say what she talks to her therapist about. Catra doesn't tell her what she talks about with Emily, either. They develop a system for starting sessions, practicing all the stuff she's supposed to do when she gets angry or starts to go numb. Listening to her breath and feeling the chair under her and stuff like that. Emily says she'll need that for the trial.

Summary
Catra draws Adora later, when she finishes her math page early. She tries to capture how the light pools in Adora's hair and turns it gold, how her teeth peek out of her smile like a secret. She guards it until Mrs. Z tells everyone to pack up, and when she pushes it towards Adora, her blood pounds and her mouth dries.

Summary
Adora sends her a picture of her mark, to make sure Catra replicates it exactly, but she doesn't need it. Catra knows every shift in hue, every curl of gold, every dapple on the edges. The paint is cool on her skin as it dries.

"Maybe she just doesn't want friends," Glimmer says on Saturday, when Adora asks her what she's doing wrong. "She sounds mean anyway."
"Kinda," Adora says. "Sometimes."
(Adora knows what pretty is supposed to look like, and the new girl isn't that. Adora has trouble looking away from her all the same.)

Summary
All the years Adora has put into the harp pay off. She's able to secure an audience with the mistress of the underworld, and when Adora plays for her, she puts every moment of pain, every ounce of grief, every bated breath into her music. Please, her harp strings beg, let her come with me or let me stay.

Summary
Catra squeezes her eyes shut and waits. When this is over, she can open Adora's door instead of her own and crawl in close enough for her skin to forget what these hands feel like, because Adora's there instead, clothes worn, softness over the muscle. Adora will put her forehead on hers and tell her she's okay and maybe that's something she can be, if Adora's there.
A prequel to if loving you kills me (i would die happy)
