Garrus had been furious at Shepard's ridiculous insistence she go solo, and Thane's calmness in the face of her stupidity only made him angrier. But the moment they received Joker's intel on Shepard's distress signal, he wasted no time in setting things in motion. It was why he found himself in a fire scorched room, his visor quickly scanning for a broken neck or spine, before carefully lifting Shepard into his arms. It was why he followed Thane, as the drell took point, leading them to the extraction zone. It was why his hands trembled, as he carefully lay Shepard down on the MedCot, once they were in the relative safety on the Normandy's MedBay. It was why, when Thane's hand unexpectedly rested over his clenched talons as he gripped the side of the cot, Garrus knew Shepard would be the death of him... and he wouldn't change a damn thing.

The heated sand warmed the soles of Thane's feet, as he surveyed the vast ochre dunes of the Intaiseikatsu desert. The picturesque sweeps and curves awed him with their monotone beauty. He tried to keep his face schooled in it's customary stoic mask, but his sheer delight broke through decades of training. Beside him, Feron flopped down into the sand, sending particles up into the light breeze. Thane smiled, and sedately joined his friend; laying back on the warm sand, he memorised the way the grains ran like water down the dune. Just a few months ago, Thane would never have pictured this was where life would take him... that he would find so much peace. He was under no illusion. It was all thanks to Shepard.
