“General?” Rex’s voice echoes in his ears but it's muffled, like Rex is miles deep under water. “Do you know that woman?”
“I think she’s…” Anakin is nine-years-old again, turning away from the hut he grew up in with nothing but a bag over his shoulders and sand in his boots. He’s 19-years-old and Owen Lars tells him his mom hasn’t been on Tatooine in almost five years. Anakin swallows thickly, “I think she’s my mom.”
The woman, Anakin’s mom, raises a shaky hand to press against her lips.
She used to kiss his temple, Anakin remembers, and the sand engrained in both his skin and the cracks in her lips would scratch against each other.
Anakin wants her to kiss his temple, wants to feel the grit of sand scratching against his skin.
She moves first, or maybe he does. Or maybe the two of them spur into motion at the same time, like engines on a podracer.

Anakin is hours away from finally freeing his mom.

His clones, Ahsoka, and Obi-Wan were all ahead of him as they ran for the entrance. He couldn't let them die. He couldn't. So he stopped running, raised his hands and summoned the force from within, tapping into the raw power that he knew he possessed. Obi-Wan stopped and turned to see Anakin standing there, his eyes widened as he realized what Anakin was about to do and he took a step towards Anakin.

Aether smiled “Wait until you see my side”.
Xiao’s frown deepened. He stepped closer without hesitation, the marsh's soft earth squelching beneath his boots. His golden gaze flicked to Aether’s side, just beneath the breastplate, a smear of blood had begun to bloom over his ribs, dark against pale skin.

He could scratch and claw or grab for his knife and end this once and for all with a stab into his unprotected side. Let his golden self bury deep into his flesh and meet his heart and spray out gore in victory.
He doesn’t know what part of him gave up first, that allowed his arms to drop and dangle limp outside of the man’s fury. What part allowed those heavy, leadened arms to drape over Higgs’ shoulders and rest there. No curled fists. No ill intent. Yet he feels the shiver of Higgs’ spine through the cloak and heavy armor that trills with dread for what hands will do to him. Maybe all they’ve ever done.
“No,” he declares. Because Sam is tired of it all. And so is Higgs.
