Something hot and bright snaps through Aranessa's bones. It feels like a static shock, like ruffling someone's hair after a long run or standing right below a lightning strike. She swallows it smoothly, and does not let her face shift at all.
"Your House is my House, General," she says. It is the kinder option. The other option would be to remind him that he does not determine what is fitting for her place, at any time. It is, and always will be, the other way around. But words get sharp and tongues get loose at this hour of the evening, and she is an adult. She can keep a proper hold on hers. "It is no trouble. It is already done. Go to sleep. Keep the guard rotations as they are. Julien will be well in hand by tomorrow."

Two spotlights hit the top of the cedar tree, revealing Hal perched on a high branch where all could see him regardless of their position in the theatre. A gold, shimmering robe billowed behind him, drawing the eye. His warm green skin was provocatively revealed by a plunging neckline. The robe was clapsed shut from the bottom of his ribcage to about mid-thigh, and strong, lightly furred legs were revealed by the slit up the center. Bolaire forgot to breathe for a minute; he went perfectly still.
“Ladies, gentlemen, assorted creatures of your own making, I welcome you to the Hallowed Round on this fated eve for A Night of Splendid Pleasure!”

Essek turned to toss a spell behind them as they rounded the next corner. Instead, Wulf caught him by the arm and jerked him on faster, causing the next volley of arrows headed their way to miss.
“Teleportation is still down.” Wulf tipped his chin toward a sigil on the wall as they rushed past.
How the Queen’s soldiers had found them, he had no idea. All he knew was Wulf and he were low enough on resources that those they had not killed would be able to take them down.
