Dick gets fired from being Robin. And he quits, sort of. Regardless, Gotham can’t be his home anymore. Bruce and Dick have never been father and son without being Batman and Robin, not really. Dick doesn’t feel like they know how. Dick spends a summer leaning on his friends and trying to figure out what to do while trying to reconcile the fact that the place he was promised isn’t there anymore. Also, he’s pretty sure he’s in love with his best friend, which is entirely unhelpful.
It’s messy, it’s complicated, it’s them figuring it out.

And just like how it gets better, it also gets worse.
There are the nights where Damian wakes up panting, his fingers grasping at the thin air around him as he searches for the shoulder of a younger boy. He squeezes the stuffed animal that Dick got for him when he was at an age where stuffed animals were deemed acceptable, listening to the tearing of seams as his fingers cut through fabric, trying and wishing and praying that the stuffing will turn into the flesh and muscle of his younger brother.
He cries as he reminds himself that Billy is okay. He presses his head against his knees and reminds himself that Billy used to be in danger but Damian saved him and he is now okay. He holds the marred stuffed animal against his chest and tries to get rid of the memory of Gods and craters and the smell of death.
But Damian is better; he has saved lesser men. He will get better.
He has to.

The anguish swimming in his bright blue eyes nearly sucked Bruce in, letting him be enveloped in the pain and loss that was barely being held in. Then the words caught up to him and Bruce frowned.

Seducing this Hufflepuff for those artifacts was going to be easy.

Newt. Handsome, rugged, and built to tame his magical creatures. This was a man with secrets. How foolish to trust the outward appearance, for one never knew what beasts lurked beneath the surface. After all... What honey badger doesn’t enjoy a wily snake for a meal?
