Summary
He lets himself get a little lost in the way Yuuji drags his finger over his back, the gentle heat of his body seeping into Megumi’s where he sits next to him, and the subtle fragrance of his body wash. It’s nice, comforting, a balm to his sore soul in the wake of exposed wounds. After a while his replies gradually grow quieter, the silences between them lasting longer as his eyelids become heavier. Still, Yuuji makes no move to leave.
Distantly, he’s aware of the lamp being turned off but Yuuji’s hand never leaves his back. He continues tracing words over his shirt, and Megumi keeps translating them, albeit more in his mind than aloud at this point. He’s just about to give into sleep again when Yuuji traces a different kanji into his spine.
He thinks he’s imagined it, exhaustion playing tricks on him, until Yuuji writes it again. And again. Repeats it, until it’s unmistakable what he’s sharing.
I like you.

He cuts right to the point. “I’ve been told that Toge is at your estate.”
“Indeed. We took him in after the Shibuya debacle.”
Yuuta knows. As he’d prepared to leave Shoko’s clinic for the meeting, Maki had pulled him aside and uttered words filled with such certainty he’d gone cold.
They took Toge. We can’t leave him there, Yuuta, they’ll kill him—if they haven’t already.
He doesn’t know much about Toge’s childhood—only what he’s been able to piece together from context and the few hints Toge’s willingly offered—but he doesn’t need to have the gory details to understand that most children born into a high-standing jujutsu clan do not lead easy lives. If Maki says that Toge is in danger in his family home, then Yuuta doesn’t need any more reason to retrieve him.
He was too late to help before. He won’t be again.

And maybe if these dares were aimed at any of his other classmates, they would make for a simple, good-natured laugh; but Yuuta’s the one who’s harbored a gigantic, thought-consuming crush for the last year that everyone appears to know about despite his (admittedly poor) efforts to conceal it.
To be fair, despite Maki’s obvious pleasure in teasing him about it at every opportunity and Panda’s less-than-subtle encouragements, he knows the game is being played as a form of support. He just wishes they were less—
“I dare you to sit in Yuuta’s lap.”
—Obvious.

He wishes he could simply enjoy this visit with his best friend for what it is but it’s so painful at times like this, where nothing and everything has changed.
And then Tooru huffs a quiet laugh, gaze unbearably fond as he leans across the table with an outstretched hand. He tucks his fingers beneath Hajime’s chin to tilt his head towards the light, thumb swiping with agonizing slowness across the edge of his bottom lip. In the next second Tooru’s sitting back, thumb against his lips as he licks away the excess sauce. His eyes are half-lidded, soft in the low light of their quiet booth, that breathy quality back in his voice as he teases affectionately, “So messy, Iwa-chan.”
Something in his gut clenches at that look, that tone. (Does he know how he sounds? He must, right? Even Tooru can’t be that oblivious, can he?) Heat blazes up through his chest until he knows his face and neck are positively saturated in a telling red. Thankfully the dim lights disguise most of his flush, and he can probably blame the alcohol for the rest, so he thinks he’s in the clear as he only slightly fumbles through his escape, using the excuse of needing the bathroom. Tooru says nothing, only smiles as he retreats.

“What is it, what’s wrong?” Sorey pleads, desperate to ease his pain. “Tell me how to help.”
“Sorey,” his name comes as a gasp, equal parts disbelieving and relieved, his voice cracking as another sob clogs his throat. Mikleo grasps his shirt in one hand, gripping the fabric above his heart with trembling fingers, tugging, and Sorey doesn’t hesitate to move closer. He lies down beside him and presses their foreheads together, shushing him gently with quiet assurances as he brushes away new tears. Guilt churns his stomach as he realizes—he’s the reason Mikleo is crying.
“I’m here,” he whispers, “It’s alright now, I’m here.”
