For better or worse, Alhaitham wasn’t left alone with his thoughts for long.
The bright green glow on the wall would’ve tipped off even an amateur. If not that, then the not-so-quiet “Fuck” Kaveh let out after slamming his foot into the wall.
If he didn’t already understand how these dreams worked, he would’ve been worried for Kaveh’s safety.
Lucky for him, this wasn’t real. Kaveh would stay alive as long as Alhaitham remembered that.

Summary
Years ago, Kaveh tore their joint research paper conclusion page in half, walked out of the office, and told Alhaitham to live his life his way.
Alhaitham listened—on the surface.
Underneath, he kept the torn pages in a drawer and spent the next few years watching from the margins: sitting in the back row of Kaveh’s lectures, nudging audits in the Bazaar, turning monsters away from a desert camp, rearranging variables so the world would hurt him a little less.
When rain and debt and bad timing finally push them back under the same roof, Kaveh discovers what’s been living between the lines of Alhaitham’s life this whole time: a vow he never said out loud, and doesn’t quite know how to return.
Or, Alhaitham spends years yearning for and protecting Kaveh in ways Kaveh was never meant to notice.

Summary
After a fight, Alhaitham has a nightmare where he loses Kaveh entirely. Waking brings no relief - only a fear he can't shake, pushing him toward Kaveh's door while praying he hasn't already gone too far.
Instantly withdrawn, Kaveh rose to his feet, silently gathered his blueprints, and turned his back. Dragging a hand over his face, Alhaitham reached for the gentler words he should’ve used in the first place to try and undo the damage - but Kaveh cut him off with a quiet 'leave me alone' and retreated into his bedroom without a backward glance.
It hadn’t even been an insult, but it was somehow all the more piercing for its bare simplicity. In one solitary sentence, Alhaitham heard the echo of every fear he carried about himself - incapable of the softness required to hold something as bright as Kaveh’s trust without breaking it into pieces.

Nobody can live in two worlds.
In the mishmash city streets of early 2000s, Alhaitham reconnects with Kaveh after a year or two apart. Kaveh works in his small publication house, making community zines and trying to spread hope, build connection – build a community. It's the first breath of fresh air Alhaitham has had in a long time. But Alhaitham knows nobody can live in two worlds...
... And he may have to destroy Kaveh's dream to achieve his own.

Summary
He turns around and Kaveh is there, confused and bleeding out in his worry.
“Are you okay?” He asks like a plea. His fingers twitch against the urge to reach out—Al-Haitham knows by now that it is one way he expresses his love. As if the love itself is not enough, as if it cannot be felt unless it is drawn into skin, gauged into the heart. But, Kaveh knows him too, and knows that even a touch borne from love would be too much, would splinter him apart, so he restrains himself. That restraint brings Al-Haitham back to himself, just for a moment. Just long enough to look at Kaveh and see Kaveh.
Al-Haitham opens his mouth. The words almost don’t come—he can feel them, sinking into his stomach, dying, or perhaps hiding away, too tired to fold into sound. But, miraculously, he opens his mouth and something comes out.
“…need to cover the flowers.”

Or, in his weaker moments, small things remind Al-Haitham of his grandmother, and suddenly, he is made of grief.

“I’m not lazy. I don’t want to get my tail wet,” Alhaitham snapped. “And I’m not getting my ears wet.”Kaveh offers to help Alhaitham wash his tail. It makes things complicated.

Summary
Alhaitham has a knack for summoning demons. It's not a learned or a practiced skill. In fact, he doesn't actually intend to summon demons, it's just a somewhat inconvenient, unpredictable byproduct of his magic, which rather unfortunately gives him the reputation of an evil wizard and all the associated troubles.
One would think if by conducting spellwork, anything from the mundane to the complex, it occasionally resulted in opening a gate to hell, that a person would swear off magic altogether, for the good of humanity. However, Alhaitham has never let public discomfort get in the way of his personal pursuits. Also, it helps that the gates he opens are somehow cute little demonic portals. The cat flaps and doggy doors of hell, if you will.

Rationally, Kaveh shouldn’t ask Alhaitham if he wants Kaveh to help him. He really shouldn’t. Sex could ruin this peace treaty they have non-verbally contracted between them. Sex could mean things will get horribly, terribly awkward. Sex would mean that Kaveh would never be able to look at Alhaitham without thinking of the memory of Alhaitham’s hands all over his body.
“Have you really thought this through?” Alhaitham asks once again, and he hasn’t sounded this serious since his offer to house Kaveh so many moons ago.
“This is my fault, as you said. I should take responsibility.” Kaveh weakly replies, licking his lips nervously. “Right?”
