Summary
Uther, King of Camelot and father to Arthur Pendragon, was in mortal peril.
This, in itself, was not news; Uther, by dint of a recalcitrant, bloodthirsty personality backed by military power and an unshakable belief in the Divine Right of Kings, had made a great deal of enemies in his day, and, in truth, made new ones almost daily.
But this time was different, in that it was entirely Arthur’s fault.

OrAfter Arthur accidentally puts his father's life in jeopardy, he must ride out of Camelot, with Merlin at his side, on a journey with no real end goal in sight

Unfortunately, Gwaine's plans have never once worked out the way he thought they would, and things just sort of fall apart from there.

Summary
After years of increasingly dangerous magical attacks, Arthur finally decides that he should know his enemy, and cracks open a bestiary to study monsters. To his shock, the book talks about people who were *born* with magic, and suddenly everything makes a lot more sense, because one of the entries reads as though it was written with Merlin specifically in mind!
Alternatively: Arthur picks up the medieval equivalent of a D&D manual, and puts two and two together, but still somehow arrives at three

In Which A Young Woman Approaches Camelot To Report A Monster Attack
* ** ** ** *
“Well, Merlin—” Bessie nearly giggled; the King had a strange way of saying Merlin’s name that felt as if he were compacting an entire speech conveying a wealth of affection, exasperation, trust, and something else she couldn’t properly name into just two syllables— “Do you know what this thing is, or do we need to fetch the books?”
“A basilisk, if we’re lucky,” Merlin said at once. “Or a cockatrice if we aren’t. You’re lucky it was newly-born, or it would have changed you completely into stone.”

Canon up until "With All My Heart;" story begins approximately a week after they return to Camelot at the end of the episode.
* * *
“Guinevere, I’m sorry, but this is important. If someone’s killing people in Camelot, I have to know who’s to blame—”
“Then look in the bloody mirror!” For a moment, Merlin didn’t realize that he’d spoken aloud; he barely recognized his own voice, vicious in a way that Merlin had never allowed himself to sound in Arthur’s presence.

"You used magic. Come with me. Now! That’s an order, Merlin.” Arthur turned and stalked off without waiting to see if Merlin would follow.
Of course, there was no doubt that he would. How could he do anything else?
******************************************************************************************************************************
Or, the author got the following comment on one of his other works, went absolutely feral, and wrote this smut"I genuinely think that Arthur's competence kink is why Merlin's magic couldn't be revealed. he'd see Merlin smite one (1) Bandit and just lose his mind"
