    Summary

Lord Aral Vorkosigan woke up naked, tangled skin-to-skin with his new wife, and experienced the same kind of terrified awe he had when he’d determined that she wasn’t a drunken hallucination. The heavens had opened up and delivered to him everything he needed most in one delightful Cordelia-shaped package, and now he just had to figure out how to keep her.

    Summary

Jaskier isn’t breathing. His skin is pale - a horrible green-grey around his lips and eyes - and when Geralt puts a hand to his jaw he’s icy cold. He presses an ear to his chest to better hear over the roar of the waves. He’s not dead. Not quite. But close.

Geralt and Jaskier's boat is caught in a storm on their way to Skellige. When Jaskier is tossed overboard, Geralt must save him - twice. But through saving his life, Geralt leaves Jaskier horribly injured - and he realises how easy it could be to accidentally hurt him again.

    Summary

Geralt remembered. Geralt remembered, and sent him this darling little postcard, even though he’s always grousing about not having any money for frivolities. He remembered, and sent him a gift, despite his continual moaning at him when they’re on the Path together.

Alone on the Path, Geralt finds something that reminds him of his bard. In Oxenfurt, equally alone, Jaskier is trying to ignore the pain of another forgotten birthday - until he receives an unexpected gift... and an unexpected guest. Perhaps this birthday isn't a disaster, after all.

“No, I’m serious, I really do have like, uh—a goblin… thing… in my house!” Jaskier insists. “Will you come take a look at it? I don’t want it to, I don’t know, eat my liver or something?”

Geralt massages at his temple. “Very few monsters are that picky. It would probably just eat all of you.”

Aka: The one where Jaskier hires Geralt to investigate a monster in his house, and the outcome is somehow better and worse than Geralt expects.

    Summary

The point is, they'd better not. It wouldn't work. And when Jaskier tries something, because he's definitely going to, it'll be up to Geralt to make the right decision and save them both the trouble.

Better that things should go on as they are. Better than sating Jaskier's whims and having it all fall apart after.

This once, perhaps, there's a lesser evil after all. And Geralt will choose it and gladly.

(Or: Jaskier starts hitting on Geralt all the time. Geralt ignores it, because that's obviously the only reasonable thing to do. Except, sooner or later, he isn't going to be able to anymore.)
