Summary
“I do love you, Russandol. You know I do, do you not?”
For a long, drawn-out moment, Maedhros only stares. Something is taking root in his chest, something he knows, then, he will not be able to extricate again. “I know,” he says, voice rough. “I—“
But Fingon stops him, pressing a hand to Maedhros’ mouth. “Don’t, not yet; tell me when we see each other next.”
Five times they share their own small ritual upon separation and reunion, and one time it takes a little longer than either of them can endure to mark its completion.

Summary
Five tents, he counts. Two dead guards. The fire within him burns so white, he wonders if it will leave anything of himself behind. Wonders if he can bring himself to care. Wonders, too, if this is what his father had felt like when he found the innards of their grandfather’s head spilt over his well-wrought front steps.
If so, perhaps Maedhros finally understands.
Maglor is taken. Maedhros handles it as well as can be expected, which is not at all.

Summary
“Do you think,” Aredhel starts, her tone idle as she wraps the last strip of fabric around his shoulder and ties it tight, “that killing your husband weighs lighter or heavier than slaying your kin?”
Celegorm freezes, his throat going dry. She does not move away, her dark eyes unforgiving upon him.
“That depends,” he finally says, catching her wrist before she can snatch her hand away. “Did you love him?”
Aredhel had visited Himlad. Celegorm decides to find out why.

Summary
"Would it help,” Maedhros starts, his tone pensive and his fingers pressing more firmly against Maglor’s jaw. “Would it help if I did not forgive you as easily? If I punished you for what you did not, could not do?”
It takes a moment for Maglor to understand, Maedhros pushing images into his mind—of rope and chains and bruised skin, of pain and pleasure mingling without release.
It makes him shiver, the thrill quickly followed by shame hot enough that he wants to flinch from it.
Maglor is unable to let go of his guilt. Maedhros gets inventive about it.

Summary
He thinks he had not quite understood his father’s scorn—the one that only buried grief—for the short, frail life of mortals. It makes little sense, of course; they all can be slain in battle any day, an opportunity that looks increasingly likely.
And yet. He had never thought of Aragorn as frail. He had, he realises, never thought of Aragorn as mortal.
Aragorn arrives at Helm's Deep despite everyone thinking him dead. Legolas deals with it as well as can be expected.

Summary
They have always lived more on stolen moments than in marital beds, but there is an urgency to this now, a fear of numbered days and looming futures. It makes them both hold on too tightly, makes teeth find exposed flesh, fingers burying into skin until they bruise.
As the Fellowship travels down the Anduin, Legolas and Aragorn get a rare moment to themselves. Naturally, they make the most of it, as best they can.

Summary
He breathes in. Turns on the exhale, the tip of his sword coming to rest against an unblemished throat.
Grey eyes stare back at him in a mixture of genuine shock and amused surprise.
“Impressive,” the elf says, raising his hands in a mock gesture of peace.
Legolas joins the Rangers. Or—five times they misunderstand each other, and one time they finally get it right.

Summary
“You look terrible,” he says. It’s a joke in all the ways it’s not, but it earns him a huff of would-be laughter all the same, which is just enough to keep his stumbling heart from tripping over his ribcage and bursting in all its bright red glory across Elyan’s floorboards.
In truth, it’s all he can do to hold himself back from running across the room and pulling him close.

Summary
Merlin knows what it’s like to starve, has survived starvation himself in the ruthless winters of Ealdor. But Arthur steps into the room, keen eyes always searching for Merlin’s own and Merlin is right back in his flour sack bed, a knot so tight in his gut that it threatens to swallow him whole and devour the entire world with it.

Summary
“And how is the third spell cured?” Merlin presses, not daring to breathe. He could swear even his heart goes still as he waits.
“By a kiss from the victim’s soulmate,” Gaius replies, looking up to catch Merlin’s unfiltered expression. Merlin had been expecting to slay a beast, or perform a ritual, or track down some ancient healing crystal. He could do those things, in fact he was used to doing them at this point. This, on the other hand.
“But soulmates aren’t real,” Merlin says, brow furrowing. He pictures the fondness in Arthur’s eyes when he looks at Gwen, and the sweet smiles she returns. A deep, aching pressure builds in his chest. “Surely, they aren’t real?”

Summary
“I can’t take this anymore!” Merlin shouted, hurt tearing through his throat and causing his voice to crack. “If you’re going to punish me then just-” He cut himself off at the startled look on Arthur’s face. Merlin closed his eyes, releasing a heavy sigh. “Get it over with.” He breathed, bowing his head.
The silence between them stretched thin and wide, greedily swallowing the echo of Merlin’s words.
