And the thing is, in that moment, it doesn’t even strike him as particularly strange. Of course, he calls for Legolas; they have been fighting side by side for far, far longer than the Fellowship has even existed. There is no one else in the world or beyond whom he trusts more to have his back.
In moments of crisis, Aragorn's first instinct is always, unfailingly, to call for Legolas. He gets it eventually. Or: 5 times Aragorn calls for Legolas, and the one time he no longer has to raise his voice.

Summary
No words are spoken, but Thorin draws a rattling breath and steels himself. After everything he has done to Bilbo, he at least owes him more than this.
“What happened?” Bilbo says, before Thorin gets there. “Did we make it to the mountain, did we find the door? The last thing I remember is Lake Town—I’m assuming the attempt to steal a bunch of weapons did not go well, then?”
The words take a moment to sink in. When they do, Thorin finally understands what people mean when they say that the floor dropped out from right beneath their feet.
Up on Ravenhill, Bilbo wakes a little earlier. It allows him to save Thorin's life, and almost—almost—costs him his own; which, as far as Bilbo is concerned, is a worthy exchange, no matter Thorin's own thoughts on the matter.
If only the aftermath, and all that still stands between them, would be so clean-cut and easy to resolve.

Grey eyes stare back at him in a mixture of genuine shock and amused surprise.
“Impressive,” the elf says, raising his hands in a mock gesture of peace.
Legolas joins the Rangers. Or—five times they misunderstand each other, and one time they finally get it right.

Summary
They have always lived more on stolen moments than in marital beds, but there is an urgency to this now, a fear of numbered days and looming futures. It makes them both hold on too tightly, makes teeth find exposed flesh, fingers burying into skin until they bruise.
As the Fellowship travels down the Anduin, Legolas and Aragorn get a rare moment to themselves. Naturally, they make the most of it, as best they can.

Summary
He thinks he had not quite understood his father’s scorn—the one that only buried grief—for the short, frail life of mortals. It makes little sense, of course; they all can be slain in battle any day, an opportunity that looks increasingly likely.
And yet. He had never thought of Aragorn as frail. He had, he realises, never thought of Aragorn as mortal.
Aragorn arrives at Helm's Deep despite everyone thinking him dead. Legolas deals with it as well as can be expected.
