Summary
Karen sits on the coffee table across from him, leaning in and placing a steady weight on his knees.
Above them, he hears, “Did something happen to Buck? Should we call Maddie?”
Eddie chokes, sitting upright, and looking over his shoulder at Hen, “No,” he says, voice gravelly. “Do not call Maddie.”
“Okay,” Hen says, frowning. “Why?”
He groans, turning back around and burying his face in his hands again. “Because Bucks probably already told her and there’s no doubt I’ve jumped to the top of her to be killed list.” He looks up. “Don’t tell me she doesn’t have a to be killed list, because I guarantee she does now.”
“Okay. What’s going on?”
He takes a deep breath, shaking his head. “I kissed Buck.”

Summary
“Oh,” Eddie yells after him, tone almost mocking. “So that’s it? You’re just going to walk away?”
Buck stops, biting down on his cheek. He knows, distantly, that they’re making a scene. That everyone who isn’t actively putting what’s left of the fire out can see and hear everything they’re saying. He sighs. “I don’t know why you’re so pissed,” he mutters, twisting back around to face him just in time to see Eddie’s eyebrows rise high up on his forehead.
“You don’t know why I’m pissed?” Eddie asks, stepping towards him.
Shit. He needs to walk away before this blows up. They’re one throw away comment from explosion.
Buck whips back around, taking a step towards the engine and away from Eddie. “That’s what I said,” he calls over his shoulder. Which—maybe, isn’t the thing to say to cool things down.
But—
“I’m pissed,” Eddie shouts back, voice frayed and desperate, “Because I fucking love you.”

“What do you think about?”
He thinks it’s a perfectly normal question to ask—who wouldn’t be curious about Eddie Diaz’s jerk off material? That’s just what being a good best friend means. Being curious. Asking the uncomfortable questions.
Eddie hesitates, lip caught between his teeth. “Nothing. Just—normal stuff. Ass, tits, shit like that.”
Buck raises his eyebrow at him skeptically. “Uh huh.”
“What?”
Affecting nonchalance, Buck shrugs. “You’re a detail-oriented person. I just… I don’t buy it. That you jerk off to the vague concept of a woman.”
Eddie huffs, cheeks going pink. Buck knows that look—he’s been caught in a lie.
“What do you think about?” Eddie asks, pivoting the conversation back to Buck.
Or: there was only one bed, and Buck is more than a little pent up.

Summary
Eddie wakes up sweating, her hair sticking to the nape of her neck, legs tangled in the sheets. Next to her Buck is naked, still sleeping, body overheated where Eddie's pressed against her, holding her tight, a palm spread over the relentless rise and fall of her ribcage. It’s early, the day barely started, and Eddie smears her damp face against the freckled skin between Buck’s shoulder blades, lips dragging, the salted taste of both of them on her tongue.

“You know,” Maddie says, waving a hand in a how silly! gesture before Buck can get the word out. “The competition.”
Eddie redirects his gaze to Maddie. “Competition?”
He could drop his glass on the concrete. Or yell fire! convincingly enough to buy him enough time to run. He could make himself throw up, or pretend to faint, or just make a break for his truck and drive it directly into the ocean.

Summary
Buck’s wearing the dress—that dress—and grinning, hair pulled back into a ponytail, baring the line of her pretty, unmarked throat. The sundress skims over her body, light and fluttering in the wind, catching just enough against her muscles to make Eddie’s mouth go dry. She looks—beautiful. Stunning. Like something Eddie wants to sink her teeth into.
Eddie tells herself she can be reasonable about this. Totally reasonable. No need to make it a thing. She can handle it. She’s fine.
Bobby greets them and ushers them inside. Buck’s hands are stacked with two trays of food, and there are more than a few bags hanging from Eddie’s own arm.
Eddie distinctly remembers Bobby telling them just to bring themselves, but Buck had insisted they contribute—and by they, Buck very much meant herself. Eddie had done nothing more than sit on a barstool, listening as Buck talked, watching as she slid around the kitchen in an apron, sports bra and a pair of grey sweats.
That outfit had not mentally prepared Eddie for this one. But it’s fine. Eddie has decided she is perfectly capable of being normal about this.

Summary
Mi media naranja. Half an orange, right? Like—two sides of the same coin, or something. A complementary coupla guys. A little silly, maybe, referring to a grown adult as a piece of fruit, but the sentiment is sweet enough.
“Hey,” Buck asks the girl beside him. “Um, Alba. She called Rosie ‘mi media naranja’. Like—half an orange? Is that a common saying in Mexico?”
“Oh, sure,” she nods. “It’s a pretty normal term of endearment. Cheesy as hell, but, well.” She gestures at where Eddie and the two women are sitting. Alba’s holding Rosie’s hand now. “When you’ve known each other that long and fit together that well… it’s just sweet.”
My most best friend. That’s what Alba said. That’s—well, that’s who Eddie is to him, essentially. And if what Eddie’s missing is a little affection in a language that feels like home, well. Buck can give that to him.
or, buck notices the lack of spanish terms of endearment in eddie’s life since his abuela died. so, he’s armed with what he’s been reliably informed is a totally normal thing to call your buddy. Operation Make My Best Friend Feel Cherished, as he’s named it on a trial basis in the privacy of his own head, is a-go

“I need you to drive me to the dentist.”
“Okay, yeah,” Buck agrees. “Put it in the calendar.”
“No,” Eddie says, clearing his throat. He sucks in a breath through his nose and lets it out through his mouth. “I need you to drive me, and I need you to stay, or I will climb out the restroom window.”
Or, Eddie is scared of the dentist. That's one secret. The other is in his sock drawer.

"You used to call me," Buck says. He takes a breath. His eyes are burning, and Eddie is just staring at him, in the locker room, in the firehouse, which is the only place they're ever alone anymore, except that they're not, not really. Anyone could walk in. "Two years ago you wouldn't even think twice."

Eddie was hoping to avoid this conversation, and he can’t even really begin to fathom how or when he would bring it up. Hey, nice save back there, he imagines, the resounding clap of his hand landing on Buck’s shoulder, echoing off the tall ceiling of the station. By the way, I can hear you touching yourself at night. I can hear you making yourself come a foot away from me.

Summary
That was good, right? Alex, smiling. Eddie was so out of practice in this sort of thing. And even when he had been in practice, he was a disaster at flirting and dating and not having a mental breakdown at the mere idea of commitment. But Alex was smiling at him and joking with him and she hadn’t run off screaming. Yet.
That was as good an omen as anything.
Eddie mustered up all his courage. “Would you like to get dinner with me?”

“Eddie,” Maddie says. “I know our kids are different ages, and our situations are different, but — it kind of sounds like you need something else besides your kid and work, too.”
Well, I used to have a best friend, Eddie thinks, then pushes the thought away. “I … I have other things. But Chris and the job are definitely the most central right now.”
"You know, you can’t put yourself last all the time, Eddie.” She laughs a little. “Straight from my therapist’s mouth to your ears! Ooh — you know what? I’ve got a great idea.”
“Oh?”
“You should come to book club. It’s something I do with my parent friends. We take turns hosting, and it’s my turn!”

Summary
He should be glad of it. He doesn’t want people to know he’s struggling, and they don’t. But why doesn’t Buck know? He’s always known, always seen through Eddie’s carefully constructed walls and carved himself a door into them. Even when Eddie resisted, even when he pushed back, Buck ducked his head and shoved through and found the tender hurt Eddie was guarding, cupped his hands around it and held until it didn’t ache so much.
And now Eddie’s bleeding internally, swollen with regret, and Buck doesn’t say a thing. Eddie can’t ask him to. If he opens his mouth, he might just start screaming.

There's distance between Eddie and Buck. Eddie isn't falling apart. These are two equally true statements.
