Arthur is fed up. He trusts Merlin with his life but he doesn’t think the same goes for Merlin. Merlin is hiding something, has been hiding something the entire time he has known him. It’s eating at him, it’s tainting their relationship in a subtle way he can’t even name.
Fortunately for him, there is a young druid who – even if not for the same reason – is fed up with Merlin’s lies as well. The young druid has grown up on stories of how the great Emrys will help the Once and Future King to unite the- blablabla yeah well WHEN is that going to happen though?! It’s been ten years, the oh so great master of magic could finally get a move on! Maybe he needs some incentive. Maybe he’s grown too accustomed to lying. Well, no more. (summary curtesy of artist!!)

On one beautiful summer morning, a rather obnoxious ruckus came from a room in the royal physician’s quarters.
“Now just what is going on in here, Merlin?” Gaius entered the room of his apprentice, having to nearly duck as a tunic was thrown right where he was standing.
“Oh- Gaius! Good morning. Oh, nothing,” Merlin laughed, pausing in his task to wave his hand. “You wouldn’t have happened to see a tiny, little dragon wood carving laying around, have you?”
Merlin’s words were strung together in a haphazard line, voice bordering on the edge of hysteria as he continued to tear his room apart.

Just at that moment, a tall man with broad shoulders and gold-like hair stepped into the cafe, the bell ringing above him just like it had for every other customer.
Except this one was different.
Different because Merlin knew exactly who this man was.
“Oh my God- Hide me! That’s my boss!” Merlin whisper-shouted, hand coming up to hide his face from view. Inside his chest, his heart pounded.

Magic is a beautiful thing. Merlin forgets that at times. It’s so easy to think of magic as something that wrecks, that ruins, that causes trouble, when that’s all he sees magic do. When those who use it fight and hurt and kill.
That’s why he was reminding himself magic can be beautiful. It can be something of life, of love, of creation.
He made flowers. They sit arranged before him. Yellow acacias, amaranth bulbs, bell flowers, yellow tulips, fennel, almond flowers, morning glories, and even sprigs of mint for decoration.

Merlin looked Leon in the eyes, those eyes. . .those stormy grey eyes. Those stormy grey eyes that flashed with this unmistakable look of betrayal, hurt, and anger.
It was a look that haunted Merlin in his sleep, when he would wake up covered in sweat, tears streaming down his face. It was a different person each night, someone new to find out his inner demons, and confront him.
Those dreams usually end with him burning at the pyre.
