Sam slows his steps when he reaches the hut. Right now he feels amped up enough that he could kick that rickety door in, reduce it to splinters with a well-placed boot. But then what good would that do either of them. He flexes the fingers of his right hand again, curls them into a fist.
Against all reason, Sam knocks on the door. Against all reason, Bucky opens it, like some kind of normal human being.

Summary
He tries to tell himself its fear of the magic, of the thinning veil between the worlds, of the possibility that his servant has been enchanted by whatever foul witchcraft is happening here. But he finds he cannot lie to himself in this place, on this night, and as he looks at Merlin he doesn’t see the glassy-eyed, empty expression men wear when they’ve been enchanted. Instead, his eyes are bright with wonder and a pure joy; the same face he’d worn that morning in the great hall, and the first time he saw Camelot in the snow, and when they’d seen that (blasted) unicorn.
And Arthur knows, deep in his belly, that what he truly fears is that this isn’t foul witchcraft at all, but that Merlin may belong here more than he ever has with Arthur.

In the event (oh, alright then, the inevitability) of his death at the hands of this monster, the chances of Merlin returning to Camelot to deliver news of any sort are quite slim, which Arthur finds both galling (the idea of Merlin being cold and lifeless is surprisingly unpleasant) and a little comforting (he’s not entirely sure a servant will be assigned to him in the afterlife, so bringing one along seems rather forward-thinking of him, a trait Arthur has rarely been accused of in life)

Summary
Arthur was having a terrible day.
Merlin had been late (a phenomenon so common it hardly bore remarking upon) and had nicked all of Arthur’s sweetmeats, training was called off due to a light drizzle his knights insisted on calling a thunderstorm, Merlin dropped half of Arthur’s armor on his foot, and now there was apparently a murderer in the castle.
And, what’s worse, Merlin had disappeared and hadn’t been seen in hours.

“Get out of my sight, and don’t come back until you can prove to me why I should allow you to remain in my service.”
Merlin stares at Arthur, confused. His tone was ominous, and it certainly sounded like a threat, but Merlin can’t quite work out what part is supposed to have him shaking in his boots. He’s halfway back to Gauis’ chambers when it dawns on him: Arthur actually thinks this stupid, degrading job is something he would be willing to fight for - as though Merlin’s life wouldn’t be complete without the honor of scrubbing the sheets Arthur manages to soil on a disturbingly regular basis.
In which it takes Merlin a bit longer to warm up to Arthur than it does in canon, but he gets there in the end.

Sam blinks, tries to focus on the screen, automatically dimmed right down to save the last few percent. 3.26AM. Which means it’s half past five in Wakanda. Somehow they’ve been talking for almost three hours. He puts the phone to his ear again just in time to hear Bucky sighing softly.
“Okay, well. Sleep well, Sam.”
Their goodbyes are always sudden like this, and Sam is never quite prepared; it’s like being given to the count of three and then the band-aid is ripped off at two. He worries at his lip with his teeth and wonders if he should say something – something other than what he usually does.
“You too,” he says. A second passes, and then two, and Bucky still hasn’t hung up. And just as Sam makes up his mind and draws a breath, the call ends with a soft click.

If he’s honest, Bucky had kind of hoped this would be the week he’d work up the courage to ask Sam out for dinner. He’d spotted a place a few days ago in town, down by the river. Quaint but classy, small but well-kept, serving the catch of the day with a promising four point six rating on Google. He’d been well on his way to suggest it the other night as they were loading the dishwasher, but then insecurity had gripped him by the throat, and the words wouldn’t come, the same old mantra of doubt doing donuts in his mind: if Sam had wanted something to happen, it would already have happened by now.

“Whiskey,” Sam says with a chuckle. “Man, you’re not even old: you’re middle aged.”
“That’s rich coming from you, Captain Cabernet,” Bucky says, flashing him a grin. “Anyway, they’ve got a good bar menu, and I’m sick of takeout. Wanna join me?”
“Sure,” Sam says, his heart doing a nervous little flip in his chest just as the property manager’s crowbar pokes in between the elevator doors, starting to pry them apart. “Sure, I’ll join you.”

“I’m sorry,” Bucky says, “about your entire car, okay? I’ll tell you what, I’ll buy you a new one.”
“I’ve seen your apartment, Bucky: you don’t have that kind of money.”
Actually he does. And he will, he decides. As soon as they’re back home, he’ll buy Sam a whole entire new car - put a red ribbon on the goddamn steering wheel.
“I’ll get a loan,” he says, because he’s not above telling a white lie to keep the bickering going.
“I have. A car,” Sam says, each word sharp and precise.
“What then? What’ll it take to get you to shut up about it?”
Sam looks over at him, holds Bucky's gaze for so long they'd be in trouble if the streets weren't deserted. But they are, and Sam keeps the car straight and steady.
"What are you offering?" he asks.
In which Sam brings up the steering wheel thing yet again and Bucky tries to make up for it.

A visiting dignitary impugns Merlin’s character. Arthur does not handle it well.
“He implied you were bedding me.” Arthur raked a frustrated hand through his hair. “It’s an attack on my honour as well. As if I would bed someone who was unwilling!”
Merlin was only half-listening to the tirade, and was therefore only distantly aware of himself responding, “Who says I’d be unwilling?”
