He sees him in the mirror, sometimes. The goatee, narrow glasses, and bald head. His strong frame and kind eyes. For a moment, he’s thirteen-years-old again, sneaking through the labyrinth of Stokely Castle with his father. Then he blinks, and it’s his own face staring back at him. The stake in his hand is his own, and he’s doing the job his father trained him for, so many years ago.
He doesn’t need his mother to tell him how much he looks like his father—he’s seen it himself. Sometimes he feels like his own father’s ghost. Intentionally or not, his memory lingers in every choice Jonno makes. His clothes: trench coats over sweater vests, wire-framed glasses, wide-brimmed hat. His reliance on wooden stakes over newer technology (technology his father didn’t live to see). His drive to protect his family.
It’s that last point that causes him to avert his eyes whenever they start playing tricks on him. Scrunch them up. He’s too old now to cry for his father—his death a wound that should have long scabbed over. No sense in picking at it. No use in dwelling on the past.
Now in his mid-thirties, Jonno's grief for his father has morphed into guilt. He confides in Vlad.

Mike still had one more thing on his mind that’s been eating at him. It wasn’t that crazy of a question to ask. They had nothing better to do anyway. Also, they were friends and friends usually talked to their friends about these kinds of things, right? This could just be one friend asking another a simple question. Anyone would’ve done the same. To fill the silence, make the wait shorter. And he used to talk about El a lot, so it only made sense to give Will an opportunity to do the same.
"So who was it?" It came out in one frantic mess of a phrase that even Mike himself barely understood.
Will jumped a little, startled. "What?"
"Um, you said you had a crush on someone," Mike said, already failing spectacularly. "Who was it? Anyone I know?"

he's leaning across the counter, white tee and black leather vest twisting with his body. he's taller, which vlad thinks may be obvious, but he hasn't grown an inch since he was sixteen, so it surprises him how differently he carries himself. broader, too. filled out into his body - not especially muscular, but wide arms, thighs, the body of a man. it makes vlad feel nauseous, and it's at that moment he knows tal is right. he wants him so badly he can't see straight.

“Yes,” Max replies without hesitation. “You’re unbearably lonely.”
Will drops his jaw, offended. Sure, he might not have the most entertaining love life, but he wouldn’t go that far. He’s happy where he is. Content. He doesn’t need a guy to fulfill him. “My loneliness is completely bearable.”

If he’s dying— if these are truly the last words that will ever be spoken between them— there’s only one thing he can say. “I love you. I’m in love with you, Mike, please. You can’t go. I love you so much,” Will whispers, cradling his body to his chest.

Will confesses his feelings as Mike takes his last breaths— and then Mike decides to be a stubborn asshole about it and survives. Will is left to deal with the aftermath of his choice, navigating an awkward new friendship.
