They’ve been treading so very carefully lately, tension in every interaction, striving desperately for normalcy. Both of them are clearly afraid to rock the boat and ruin whatever progress they’ve made, but the longer Arthur observes Merlin’s sojourns to the woods for some unknown purpose (something worth lying about, again), the more difficult it becomes to hold his tongue.

In order to keep the Crown Prince from recognizing him, he took a disguise magic potion and changed his appearance. He made himself look younger - like the age he was when he first arrived in Camelot - his body was smaller, not too gangly, the lines of his cheekbones were softer, his voice became thinner, and he even changed his hair blonde, and long. Standing in front of the mirror with Gaius, they both marveled at Merlin's new look. The only thing the potion couldn't change was his eyes, and he hoped the royal prat wouldn't notice based on that alone. Well, considering how many times he had used magic right under Arthur's nose without the bloke knowing anything about it, he didn't think Arthur could.

Merlin wiped blood from his lip, adrenaline surging, mixing with something hotter. Arthur's grip tightened, bodies pressed close in the shadows, the alley reeking of garbage and gunpowder.
“Okay. We'll try.” Merlin muttered, dropping to his knees on the gritty pavement. His nose throbbed, blood trickling steady, but he didn't care. He fumbled Arthur's belt open, yanking down the zipper with bloody fingers.
Agent Merlin nearly lost the man he loved.

It could certainly be described as a rather bad week, between Morgana's kidnapping, and a dragon all but levelling the lower town and making a good effort on the upper, not to mention Merlin's subsequent arrest. Arthur's new orders; to leave Merlin behind in order to meet with the not-so-last dragonlord and attempt a negotiation with his manservant's life as the lure, only feels to be the natural continuation for the entirely unwelcome developments.
