It has occurred to Essek that this will be the first time the two of them have been truly alone, apart from their time in Aeor when Caleb gave up all his hopes of changing the past. Caleb had been quiet, then. They had slept pressed tight against each other in deference to the cold. That night, Caleb had cried in silence, and Essek had no words to comfort him. This is different.
Six months post Cognouza, Caleb and Essek are together. This is a scene of them actually, you know, getting together.

It is still cold, and will probably get a little bit colder through the night. It is awkward, but… from a logical standpoint… he might be used to roughing it but Essek– no matter what he says– is not. So he worries.
“Um, this might be a bit… forward,” he says shortly, “but… if we were to sleep close together, it would help us keep warm throughout the night, too.”

When Essek first pitched this, Caleb was not opposed. The idea of being bound did not arouse him the same way that binding Essek does, but it wasn't abhorrent to him. He was willing to try. He could tell, despite Essek's carefully neutral tone as he asked, that the idea appealed to him very much. Caleb wanted—always wants—to make Essek happy. So, even as Essek assured him that he would not be upset if Caleb refused, Caleb agreed.
Now, Essek sits perched at the end of their bed, grinning wickedly as he unwinds a length of glistening silver silk rope
"Excited?" Caleb teases, raising an eyebrow.
Essek bites his bottom lip, which does nothing to stifle his smile. "Perhaps. Are you?"
"I am intrigued, certainly," Caleb says. "It will be a learning experience one way or another."

Essek wants to try tying Caleb up for a change. It dredges up unwelcome memories for Caleb in ways neither of them expected.

Summary
Caleb approaches, but the man doesn't raise his eyes until he is taking a seat right next to him. There is a quick up-and-down, which Caleb is not exactly a stranger to, so he smiles wryly under the attention."Lythir?" The drow's intonation is slightly lilted, seductive, but the way he says the name betrays some nervousness.
There is a pang in Caleb's chest at the possibility of having to leave without getting to have a conversation, but he shakes his head truthfully. "If you're waiting for someone I can leave." he says, but doesn't move until told to. Lavander eyes pierce through his as if they are trying to find his intention from one sentence.

Or the one where Essek gets stood up on a blind date, but Caleb is there to start a romance that was eventually bound to start burning.

It's over twice as large as the cottage where he'd spent his childhood—a kitchen separate from the dining room and the sitting room! Not one, but two bathrooms! And best of all, three whole bedrooms! Enough space for Caleb, his books, and whichever of his friends would deign to visit him. The height of luxury indeed. Back then, Bren’s parents could only afford one bedroom, and young Bren himself had slept in the loft. Frumpkin would curl up on the foot of Bren’s mattress, and he'd wake to the smell of breakfast, the early morning light in his eyes, the rafters brushing his hair when he got up.
Or so it had been once, an entire lifetime ago.
“Veth,” he says.
She looks up at him. Then she grins. “Isn't this exciting?”
“I think so,” Caleb says, a split second too late.

Essek barely allowed him to step into the main floor. Lavender fingertips pressed to Caleb’s chest, backing him up to the door and shutting it behind him. Though Essek was extremely underdressed compared to Caleb in his undone hair, bare feet, and casual wear, he pulled himself up to his full height –still several inches shorter than Caleb when not floating– and glared up at Caleb with a well practiced indignant facade.
