“Has anyone ever even met the girl? I mean, two months cooped up on that old farm, she’s gotta be at least- like -in some way mentally unhinged.”

The new farmer is an extremely weird sword-wielding recluse who causes Shane a lot of undue distress. And without meaning to, helps him remember what it feels like to live.

“What is it?” Alastor says. “What's happened?”

Lucifer shakes his head. He doesn’t have the words yet to explain the gravity of his mistake. Alastor pulls Lucifer back into his arms, and Lucifer still doesn’t say anything — he just burrows deeper into Alastor’s embrace.

Soon, he’ll need to face them all. He’ll need to explain to Alastor, and the rest of Hell, what all this means:

    That Tax Season has begun.
    ____________

It is said that two things in this universe are inescapable: Death and taxes.

Lucifer is spectacularly bad at coping with both.

    Summary

Perhaps it was only that one fragile thread of love for their families that still connected them and the thought of losing even that made his chest clench.

Even so, it stung when Lyney remembered her unique relationship with someone currently stationed in Fontaine as well. And the fool that he was for the slightest sliver of her attention he couldn't help but voice his thoughts - regretting them the second the words left his mouth.

“But you’re friends with the 11th Harbinger.“

“Childe never lied about where his loyalties lie,” Lumine simply responded.

There was nothing Lyney could reply to that, nothing to ease the tightening of his throat at the finality in her words. But the silence that started to stretched between them was becoming far too deafening to bear for long.

“I never wanted to lie to you,” he tried once more. "It’s just that speaking the truth could have hurt others.“

“Yes, but so do lies,” Lumine said, her voice soft but eyes now veiled with sorrow breaking through her carefully crafted mask.

    Summary

That’s a draw to Lyney, a gravitational attraction.

The simple explanation would be that he reminds her of her brother. The even simpler explanation would be that he’s dazzling—is made to dazzle, to lure, to distract, by the very nature of his profession. Like a shining conch lying at the floor of the ocean, leading Lumine astray from her initial quest in favour of running her hand over its spiny, glittering surface. Perhaps the distraction is why it aches a little less, letting herself get carried by the roar of the gasps and cheers and applause of the crowd.

However, Lyney is more than just a magician donning a top hat; he embodies the concept well, but he’s only human. Capable of performing, just as capable of being hurt.

And sometimes, he looks at her strangely. After his performance ends, when the afterglow has worn off, when the adrenaline has dissipated, he always glances at her, a little sad of eye.

    or: how to unperform.
