Summary
Sadie Adler hadn't had no place nor person to call home for near a decade. The road was long as it was lonely, and it gave an awful lot of time for her to get quite well acquainted with herself. Bounty hunting took her far, but it may just take her back somewhere she didn't figure she'd ever get to see again, and to someone she's been thinking about for much too long.

Summary
He knows he’s lying to himself. He’d just hoped that if he believed in the anonymous, detached killer that is Javier Escuella, that he would come into existence. Not this collection of dust and scars and loneliness that keeps breathing despite the world’s efforts to let it die.
Javier is left alive in El Presidio.

Summary
Arthur wasn’t sure when things between him and Charles had become strained. When the easy friendship and long rides in the woods had become sources of stress for him, every awkward draw of the bow a test he was bound to fail. Charles was a kind man, overlooking the way Arthur couldn’t quite land a good shot with the thing. Or the way he couldn’t hide his own confused and embarrassing thoughts- jealousy and maybe something worse.

Summary
The Van der Linde gang has gone through a lifetime of grief over the course of just a few days, licking their wounds after the failed Blackwater heist and attempting to get back to business as usual. Javier is no stranger to these aches and pains: he copes by treasuring every moment he's given, even as bad habits, old and new, start to bloom.
He might be able to tame them with a song, if he can keep from pulling open old wounds again and bleeding out.

Summary
This isn’t some sort of trial. Dutch has clearly made his mind up already regarding Charles joining the gang. Arthur’s opinion doesn’t matter. At least not yet.
Starts prior to Blackwater/start of game. Not strictly canon compliant.

Summary
Charles has never intended to end up in a gang. There's a danger involved when creatures like him spend too long with a group. The wolf was lonely, though. At the end of the day, maybe Charles was too.
(In which everything is mostly the same, but Charles is hiding a hairy secret.)

Summary
"It's familiar and yet different, Charles muses, those little details that are new the same ones that have shifted his life just so: the soft humming in his back, a second set of hoof prints beside Taima's, leading all the way back to a camp that, somewhere down the line, became something like home in his mind."
A collection of calm moments before all hell broke loose.

Summary
“Hey.”
Charles looks up, squinting against the sun, and focuses on the figure looming above him. It’s a bright day on the mountain, and all this damned snow is doing nobody any favors. “Arthur,” he says. “Good morning.”
“Huh? Yeah, mornin’.” Arthur tilts his head, scratches at his jaw, and tucks his chin down towards his chest. It’s a very particular mannerism, one that Charles has watched him perform countless times.

Summary
It started during Arthur’s first year with the gang. He’d seen Dutch covet before: a pocket watch, a wool coat. A pair of ladies giggling to one another under the same parasol. But that word, covet—it was Hosea who’d first taught him what it means. Pocketed away together on some far corner of camp, they mucked through a reading lesson with King James and the very last candle.
“‘For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through... with many sorrows…’”
“What’s wrong, Arthur?”
“What’s ‘coveted’ mean?”
“Oh, ahh… Greed. Coveting means wanting something that isn’t already yours.”
“‘Covet’ means ‘greed?’”
“Well, yes. I’d say… to covet is to want something a little too badly.”

Summary
It doesn’t matter that his throat hurts. It doesn’t matter that he can hardly swallow. It doesn’t matter that a handful of hours ago he’d been slowly dying with a rope tight across his trachea.
What matters is the image of Charles, with the sun burning on his shoulders like a devil, face cast in shadows. What matters is the look of indignant rage that pinches Charles brow, the casual, meticulous speed in which he dispatches Arthur’s captor. What matters is the sweet, dizzying air filling his lungs, and the delirious thought that passed in his head -
