Ilya let himself soften into it. He’d missed this, the simple camaraderie between teammates. He did feel lonely, but in some ways he felt safer with this team, and Shane had given him that, it was because of Shane that he moved to Ottawa. All the good things in his life curved back to Shane. Looking around, he tried to imagine him here, not Shane Hollander the hockey player, but his Shane, the man who made the darkest rooms feel like home. He felt suddenly certain that they would welcome him with love and respect. And, God help him, he was still hoping like an idiot that Shane would walk through the door.
Ilya tightened his grip on his roasting stick, jaw set, trying to divert his thoughts back to the present, when a ripple went through the group. Conversation dipped, then stopped completely.
“Um… what the fuck,” Dillon muttered, eyes flicking toward the house. “Is that Shane Hollander?”

Ilya went silent immediately. That was not his brother’s voice. Nor was it Katia’s, his sister-in-law’s. It was an aristocratic, cold voice. He went completely still.
“Yes.”
“I’m calling from the Child Services Department, Ilya Grigorievich,” the woman continued, and Ilya frowned deeply. “Your brother Alexei Rozanov and his wife died yesterday in a car accident.”
Twice in his life, Ilya had felt like this. The ice around his heart melted just enough for the numbness to vanish and give way to a sharp, stinging pain. It lasted only two seconds before he managed to compose himself. He didn’t want to feel anything for Alexei, so even if Katia’s death carried a trace of sadness—she was a mess, but she always tried to smile at him and cook warm meals for him when he visited Russia—, he dismissed the feeling entirely.
“So what?”
“You are the only living family member of their daughter. Your brother named you as her legal guardian, Ilya Grigorievich.”

“Yes, I speak Russian,” he snapped, defensive and angry. He knew that it had been a mistake to even try to be friendly with Rozanov. “Why? Do I not look Russian to you?” He scoffed.
“No, not really,” Rozanov said. Some of his teammates laughed, although they mostly looked surprised that Shane was speaking to them at all. Rozanov didn’t laugh, though. “Are you Russian?”
“Go fuck yourself.”

Despite an inauspicious start, when Russia’s Ilya Rozanov learns that Canada’s Shane Hollander is fluent in Russian at their first World Junior Championships tournament, it changes everything and sets them on a different course. “Well, places like this one are set up so that caretakers can find littles to take home with them to be a family. That’s why we were here a couple of weeks ago, so that we could meet a little boy or girl that we really like and have a… a playdate with them later, to make sure they like us right back, hopefully enough to come home with us.”
Zayn could practically see gears turning in Harry’s head.
“Do you like me?” Harry asked quietly and looked between the two men.
“We do, Harry. We like you a lot.” Louis smiled. “Do you like us?”
Harry nodded. “You’re nice. Like you a lot.”

It’s not fair to neither of them. He shouldn’t talk, he should just jump, however there’s something about the stranger’s voice that sooths him and he wants to hear more of it. It’s selfish he knows, but Louis always was weak.
“Love, I need you to grab my hand for me okay? You could really hurt yourself, it’s dangerous to step over the barrier, love. Grab my hand, I’ll take you to the other side safely ok?”
The stranger doesn’t seem to understand how far the other side seems to Louis. "

Louis has suffered abuse from his father since he was a child. He needs to escape and Harry is there to show him that death isn't the only way to do so.

Summary
Zayn and Liam Malik-Payne have been married for twenty-four years. They've had some rough times, but the really great times have made up for them. It took eight years for them to have their first child, Louis. Louis is sixteen and he likes to test authority. He doesn't like rules and he'd made that very obvious from the day he was born. Their second child was born four years later. Niall, who is twelve, is the shyest member of the family. He doesn't like loud noises or being in public places. He has social anxiety and he see's a therapist for it. Harry is the youngest at three. He's funny and charming and really friendly. He has an open heart and mind. He'll trust anyone, which can get him in a bit of trouble.
The Malik-Payne family maybe a little crazy at times, and they may fight some, but one thing will never change. They love each other no matter what.
