Summary
The twenty-first century is going just fine for Steve Rogers between his work as Captain America and his personal life, when the Avengers become the custodians of another mysterious supersoldier and Steve becomes his primary handler.
Every day is the same for the asset until it is handed over to the least competent handler it's ever had, and a team who are either too stupid or too ill-equipped to appropriately maintain a weapon of its caliber.
Both Steve and the asset find the partnership troublesome, and yet they both grow to value it and each other. When the Winter Soldier is recalled under strange circumstances, neither wishes to part. Will Steve even know what he has let go?

There is a mildly self-satisfied smile on John’s face. Oh, Walker genuinely thought that was rousing.
“Guys like us” Bucky echoes. “Guys like us? I was mindfucked for 70 years, Walker, by the goddamn Nazis. You took the serum and had an international crash out. Guys like us? Fuck off. Your wife left you ‘cos you're an officious asshole. The shit I was made to do? You’d never have survived a second of it”
Walker’s jaw sets. His tongue pushes at the skin below his lip. His eyes go from righteous and pleading to a very dark blue.
“Yeah, you’re right, Barnes. I’m not blessed with such a pretty, fuckable face”

Summary
That seems to be the thing that breaks the ice between them; Bucky's never really hung out with Sam before, past being jammed into a too-small car for six hours and then two uncomfortable months in a safehouse trying not to get on each other’s last nerve. Now they’re getting lunch or coffee every few days. Sam falls asleep on Bucky’s couch three more times. Bucky joins him and Steve a couple of times on their morning run.
He doesn’t notice, is the thing; doesn’t notice how ever since Sam slept on his couch that night he’s been letting Bucky closer bit by bit, that as Bucky’s been wondering about the boundaries and structures of friendship, Sam’s been drawing in.
