It’s the first time in a while that he doesn’t know what comes next. He’s dove into the water hundreds of times. Screamed as his flesh was torn apart, heard Master of Puppets in the distance and held back tears. Felt Max’s cold, small hand in his as she laid in the hospital bed. There are things that always happen, no matter how hard he tries: El doesn’t arrive in time. Eddie dies. Max is put in a coma.
Steve fails. They lose.
“Steve, how many loops have you been through?”
His head is nodding, and his eyes are watery, and Eddie has approached him like a spooked animal.
“I lost count.”
AKA: The one where Steve Harrington is stuck in a time loop, and Eddie Munson is really fucking hard to save, or: fuck Volume 2, these bitches are in love.

Summary
It’s always the way this goes. This back and forth between them.
Richard and Julie would leave town for some business conference or another and their kid would throw a rager in their absence. Hopper would then be called out to a noise complaint - send all his lackeys home - and the moment he and Steve were alone, the kid’s attitude would completely switch up. Change from cocky, spoiled brat to a heady combination of fear and apprehension.
Jim has his theories as to why.

He doesn’t really know why he says it, it’s not like Eddie cares about the old King of Hawkins High; Steve Harrington is an asshole. That’s just a fact of life. The sky is blue, high school is pointless, Steve Harrington is a dickhead.
But Eddie likes this kid, likes all of them actually.
Dustin turns to look at him, a small smile on his lips, his eyes softening, and bingo.

Steve grins up at the ceiling, languid and sated. He feels so fucking good. Every muscle in his body is relaxed, practically turning him into a melted puddle in the middle of Eddie’s trailer. The carpet underneath him is soft and plush, and maybe a little outdated, but Steve swears he could sleep here for an entire year. He runs his open palms along the shag, letting out a contented noise - somewhere between a hum and a moan.
“God, you’re so fucking high,” Eddie says.

It’s a solid hour since the final bell rang to announce the end of the school day, and yet Eddie Munson is stuck waiting under the bleachers in the empty gym, hoping to snag a ride home with Gareth since his van chose that morning to crap out on him.
Still, it’s not all bad. He finally has a moment of privacy away from judgmental stares and scathing insults; a little bit of much needed peace and quiet.
That is, until the gym doors slam open and a panicked Steve Harrington is sprinting in, throwing himself under the bleachers and slamming into him like a 5’11” freight train of wiry muscle, expensive cologne, and perfect hair.

Jim paused, taking him in.
The pale skin and bags under his eyes supported what he had been saying about not sleeping well. The poor boy looked like he hadn't had a full night's rest in months. Not only that but he was looking thinner - obviously he was not taking care of himself properly. It was concerning and Jim couldn't help but be grateful that a random passerby had called the police about a suspicious figure sitting on the edge of the quarry that evening. Who knew how long it would have taken them to figure out what was happening otherwise?

Steve shrugged, wincing at the gesture, “s’different,” he admitted.

"Nope," Eddie presses out. "Actually, I was, uh." He forces himself to exhale, and says, "I was trying to rub one out."
Steve stares at him. "What?"
"You know," Eddie says nervously. "Crankin' the hog. Whacking off. Jerkin' the gerkin. Stroking the one-eyed snake -"
"No I got that," Steve says, and Eddie immediately shuts up, "you're saying that's how you tore your sutures?"
"Yes."
"By -"
"Yep."
"Oh my God," Steve says faintly, then starts laughing.

Steve thought his days of picking fights with some random jocks after school were behind him. He graduated, had a somewhat stable job at Family Video, a responsibility. He should've just continued driving when he saw Jason and his gang corner Eddie one evening.
(Somehow Jason never let Eddie go, not even after the police ruled he had no involvement in Chrissy's murder.)
Steve and Eddie weren't really friends. They never actually talked, but Eddie was losing and outnumbered, and Steve didn't have the heart to continue driving and leave the poor guy to his fate.
