Summary
Regret was a strange thing. You regretted a few things in your life, but you never thought that you’d regret being rescued from an island you’d been trapped on for weeks.
Except there it was, a tiny fissure in your happiness at being saved. As the helicopter landed, rescuers rushing out and towards where you and Billy were standing, you couldn’t help but wish they hadn’t come.
It was there and gone in an instant but you’d hold it for the rest of your life.

Summary:

“Billy got caught up in an IED explosion during the service. He’s got some scars and is kind of a recluse these days,” Karen explained quietly as she put the pie on the counter. “He’s great with the kids and he loves Frank, but we almost had to beg him to be the best man. He used to be quite vain about his looks.”
“That’s low Karen,” the new voice said from behind the two of you.Karen spun around and apologized, but you could hear a laugh in her voice. You were glad that she didn’t feel like she needed to walk on eggshells around him. Preparing yourself, you turned around to face him as well.
This was Billy? After hearing Karen and Frank talk about his scars, you had expected Phantom of the Opera. They were bad, but not as bad as you had expected. And it really didn’t take away from his looks.
This guy? Still had a lot of reason to be vain.
Aaaaand you were staring.
