Ed shields his eyes against the blazing desert sun of Ishval and tries to ignore the way his white glove is stained red, pretends it’s oil instead of blood.
There is a wave of heat from somewhere to his right and up ahead, yards away but unnaturally strong, and the wind carries with it screams and the smell of burning flesh.
A shot echoes through the stillness of the high noon, and he counts to five in his head. Another shot.

Roy remembers his first thought, quite immaturely, being hang on, aren't I supposed to be the youngest State Alchemist?
His second, more sensible thought was less coherent and more a visceral flood of fearsome protection and despair, and the accusatory assessment that this was no place for a child.

Then John grabbed Dean by the collar and dragged them both to the car. Once they were inside the impala he turns towards his boy “You don’t ever do that again,”
And then he felt like crying. Like a failure of a man, like a failure of a father.
"Safety's here," John said, thumbing the switch with deliberate movement. "You left it off."
Dean blinked up at him, green eyes wet.
John ejected the empty magazine. The metallic click echoed between them. He pulled a fresh one from his jacket pocket, slapped it home with practiced ease.
"Try again."
Or;
John Winchester was not a good man but if it kept his boys alive, if it kept them safe. He was willing to look past almost anything.
He wonders where along the line even that had become a lie.
A character study of a very flawed man from the night his wife died up until he gave his life for his son.

Summary
Once Neil gets to about page 6 when looking over his play, he feels his eyebrows furrow. Now, obviously since the play was about the Poets as a whole, there wasn’t really a main character. There would be a more prominent character in each given scene, but Neil made sure to avoid making himself the one who narrated and directed the entire story.
But once he was about halfway through rereading what he had so far, he realized that every character more or less revolved around one Poet in particular. Every scene managed to include the character, there were always in-depth descriptions of what he and his facial expressions looked like, and everyone either went to him for help or obviously valued his opinion highly.
Neil had named the character William, and he was realizing now that he had included a surprising amount of descriptions about this character’s blond hair, blue eyes, and unassuming but devout personality.
Oh shit, Neil thinks to himself, I accidentally made Todd the main character.
Or in which it's 1960, the Poets' senior year at Welton, and Neil's writing a secret play, his magnum opus, but there's just one problem: Todd keeps getting in the way.

“I don’t know. When I find the words,” said Todd.
“You have the words already!” Neil protested. “You just need something to write about.”
“Like what?”
Another moment of quiet, another laser-bright stare from Neil, as if he were trying to beam an answer directly into Todd’s mind.
He eventually seemed to give up on that, and so he said, “I guess… nature. Childhood. Society.” A pause. “Love.”

Neil Perry was six years old the first time he felt the sting of his father’s cruel words seep like poison into his skin. In a local supermarket in the small town of Wilmington, Vermont that the Perrys called home, the neatly stacked apples on the quaint wooden display were fresh and crisp.
“Rose, what are you doing still holding his hand in public like that? He’s in the first grade now, he ought to start to become more independent. Boys don’t hold their mother’s hands at this age,” he sneered.☆☽☆
Todd Anderson knew all about shame. If there was one feeling that always returned to him like home, year after year as he got older, it was shame. Shame for feeling different. Shame for hardly being able to get a sentence out without stuttering. Shame for being inferior, inferior to Jeffrey.
A mostly canon-compliant DPS story, following the major events of the movie, but focusing more on the inner thoughts of characters (mostly Neil and Todd). Focuses on Neil and Todd's relationship, Todd's issues with anxiety, Neil's issues with depression and not being able to follow his own path.

“Why didn’t you leave a note?” Todd wonders, and he can feel Neil watching him like hawks do field mice but being caught feels a little like being saved.
His voice sounds wretched. “…I don’t know.”
Todd thinks about Keating’s hands on his eyes, spinning around the classroom, forcing the poetry out of his stammer. It seems he can only find the right words to say within dizzying darkness. “Do not go gentle into that good night, Neil,” he breathes, waxing poetic because what else is there to do? “Rage.”

Summary

He's assigned with one Neil Perry as his roommate, a passionate and outgoing boy who wants to break Todd out of his shell. Todd thinks that Neil is everything the he's not, but they have more in common than they think as they begin to understand each other better.
The new English teacher at Welton introduces the class of 1990 to the beauty of art and literature, and Neil and Todd form a deep bond over the course on their Junior year of high school that they don't fully understand and can't afford to acknowledge.
