“I’m so sorry,” Vickie stammered, feeling her cheeks heat and despair mount higher in her. Everyone would know by tomorrow, because of her stupid big mouth. It had betrayed her in a way she hadn’t imagined before. No matter how nice Robin had been, she couldn’t imagine her keeping something so huge - something that meant she’d been kissed - to herself. “I just…” I can’t say she looked like Danny, she doesn’t look anything like him. I’m such an idiot. Why couldn’t I slow down for once? Why did I just assume?
“Vickie,” Robin replied in a quiet voice. Her lips twitched upwards, but not into a smirk. Just a smile. “You don’t have to stop.”

Jackdawshade, temporarily crashing in RiversideClan after Flamewatcher’s hospitalisation, would LOVE to be the guy who was smart enough to steal from the cash register - but he wasn’t, and he certainly wasn’t the one who stole Stemflower’s antique music box. Unfortunately, everyone else seems pretty convinced that he did, and if he can’t prove for sure it wasn’t him by Christmas, he’ll be sent away in exile and disgrace. Which he wouldn’t exactly mind, if he had anywhere to stay.
With the help of his (ex??) sister-in-law Blueblossom, childhood friend (and ALSO ex sister-in-law) Feathersong and her sister Violetberry, Jackdawshade needs to prove innocence, while also avoiding the Crescent city group that he and his brother owe a shit-ton of money to. There’s seven days till Christmas. What’s the worst that could happen?

Koi of BerryClan begins to feel resentment to the Clans that seem to oppose them at every turn. As conflict turns to battle, change is found to not always be a positive thing, and resentment turns to rage, it becomes a matter of debate if the Clans will ever find a time of peace again…

“Ha, ha,” Jackdawshade replied weakly, unable to push away the anxiety that made knots in his stomach. He’d only returned a couple of days ago - if he kept messing up, Fadedstar wouldn’t have much of a reason to keep him around. “Well, Flamewatcher and his fleas might’ve been crappy flatmates, but they never minded that our food wasn’t home-cooked. Are you going to help me salvage it, or just keep making fun?”
He almost jumped at the look of utmost repulsion that Feathersong shot him. “You want to salvage that? Do you have a time machine?”
“I can’t cook another lasagne, Feather. Ever,” Jackdawshade replied pleadingly, raising his paws in mock-surrender. “I don’t think we’ll survive the attempt.”
Feathersong snorted, and he was reminded with a pang of nostalgia how he could always make her laugh. Stars - Beyond, whatever. It suddenly occurred to him that it’d been years since he’d heard her laugh. Before he left, even, around the time they started talking less.
[Jackdawshade didn't come home for many reasons, but Feathersong was never one of them.]

“She’s a fighter,” Goldy chucked, with the affection she had reserved only for babies. “She won’t be agreeable a day in her life.”
“Good,” Mag, her mother, lifted her higher with the last of her strength as Ruth screamed as loud as she could. “Let her name be the opposite of what she truly is. Let her be ruthless.”
Those were her final words. Mag lay back down and closed her eyes, cradling the shrieking bundle in her freckled hands that would soon go cold. Ruth had won her first battle - the one to live, at the cost of the mother who carried and bore her. Her father wept, blaming the girl for robbing his wife of the last of her strength, as Goldy rocked her, desperately trying to quiet her defiant howls.
All this in her first hour of life.
