Summary
At first, when the boy— Carver— insisted on avoiding his eyes, Loghain assumed that it was the insolence of youth. That this boy— little more than a child— was simply angry that his lot in life had led him to the Wardens, and Loghain was just another symbol of that.
But the days turned to weeks, and the boy still did not speak to him, beyond the occasional necessary word or two as they traveled. And then one day, Loghain caught his gaze, in the moment before he tore it away, before he’d seen Loghain notice. His eyes did not bear the shadow of idle resent. Instead, they burned with a hatred that Loghain knew well: the same one that he faced in his reflection.

Summary
Carver had watched his fair share of dog fights, back in Ferelden. There was a moment, every time, when the pinned Mabari knew it had lost. The wild look the dog would get in its eyes as it set itself to its last frantic, fearful, snarling struggle. Determined to claw and bite and scrape its way back, no matter what the cost.
It was a look that he recognized in the eyes of the gathered Wardens, as the Commander told them the Plan.
He’d bet on plenty of losing dogs, but he knew when to call it. And he knew the look of a lost fight.
