Summary
AU. Imogen Cardulo and her long-time boyfriend, Garrick Tavis, are deeply in love. When he suddenly has to go on an air force mission with his brother (Derik) and her sister (Braelyn), Imogen, who does engineering and tactics at the base, has to babysit her niece, Julianne (the daughter of Derik and Braelyn).
A few weeks into the 2-month mission, Imogen discovers that she’s pregnant. She’s terrified and unsure what to do - she wasn’t expecting this and thought they were being safe enough to prevent it. However, it gets worse when the Venin (a terrorist group) attack Derik, Braeylin, and Garrick’s planes.
The couple is killed, and Garrick has life-threatening injuries. How can Imogen cope with grieving, looking after her boyfriend, and caring for her nine-month-old niece? I don’t look up at him, too afraid that he’ll be able to read the rare moment of vulnerability and really see me. See the parts of me that aren’t made of hardened stone. The parts that can watch two people so clearly in love and think about how nice it must be.
I stare stubbornly ahead at my best friend and the love of her life and try not to let myself be too envious of that bond they share while I deny myself the chance at anything close to it. “Still,” I mutter, “thank you. Quinn really needed this.”

I don’t know how many people would care to listen to a story they’ve heard before, but this is the first time I’ve told it and I can promise you there are parts of it you’ve never heard before and some gross exaggeration and blemishes that those dramatic story tellers just love to add. Those bards are never satisfied with the truth, especially when it lacks the necessary theatrics to attract the attention of the audience and win them prizes in the great public contests.
As if being a woman who could turn people into stone with her gaze just because you pissed off a god or two isn’t dramatic enough! They really had to add snakes and beheadings to it! Really, it’s hard not to be offended!

If you haven't read Fourth Wing and Iron Flame yet, then I would recommend skipping this fanfic as it contains SPOILERS.
Imogen Cardulo's life doesn't begin with her breaking Violet Sorrengail's arm on Assessment Day and there is much more going on with her than what Violet sees. She is more than a side character this time around.
Once upon a time, because that is how all stories begin, she was just another teenage girl - a little rebellious, a little more reckless than her parents would have preferred, a typically annoying little sister... an awesome friend or a pain in the ass (depending on the day and which one of her friends you asked) and she had a not so little or subtle crush on Garrick Tavis, but who can blame her for that?
Then all the adults in her life went to war and the course of her life changed drastically.
This is her story, in her own words. Starting from the Apostasy and covering all the high and lows, all the joyful moments and the heartbreaks, all the victories and the mistakes and giving us a look into her relationships with Xaden, Bodhi, Quinn and especially Garrick.
