Chris seems to be looking anywhere but into the camera; he won’t look at Buck, not even over the phone. He lets out a big sigh, and with a twitch of his nose, mumbles something that sounds an awful lot like, “I’m sorry.”
Whatever Buck had been expecting, it wasn’t that.
“For what, buddy?”
“For not calling you.”
Even in context, it wouldn’t make much sense to anyone else, given that they’re currently on a FaceTime call Chris initiated. But Buck knows damn well that the kid doesn’t mean this call.
OR: A few days after leaving for Texas, Christopher reaches out to Buck.

“No!” Chris whirled on him, a complete shift from the standoffish vibe he had been giving a second ago. The tears he bravely held back finally broke free from his eyes, sliding down his rosy cheeks from behind his glasses. He shook his head vehemently, the yellow crayon falling to the table. “No, I’m not mad. Please…” His words turned to whimpers, his lip trembling. “Please don’t leave me too.”

“You look great, kid!” the clerk says, winking down at Chris. Chris, who immediately mumbles something about not being a kid anymore. “Would you like for me to help find matching ties for you and your dad?”
Buck’s heart drops in his chest. He seeks out Eddie immediately, looking for a reaction. It might not be the first time someone’s assumed Buck was Christopher’s dad, but it’s the first time it’s happened within Eddie’s earshot.

Summary
Buck is struggling; he has been for a while. As every new trauma in his life piles up, Buck finds himself increasingly needing to talk to someone about it. He'd had Dr. Copeland for a while, but she'd retired and he couldn't muster up the energy to find someone else.
He should talk to Eddie. After all, Eddie had been present for or involved in so much of Buck's recent trauma, it made sense that he'd be the easiest to talk to about it. But Eddie had made so much progress with Frank, and Buck wasn't about to interfere with that because of his own problems.
Buck could—would deal with it. He'd suck it up and carry on.
Unfortunately for Buck, his life was hardly ever that easy.

He isn’t, because any time he’s at Bobby and Athena’s and Athena offers him a glass of red wine, he declines and gets all queasy. He isn’t, because he hasn’t been able to have ketchup in over two years because of what it reminds him of. He isn’t, because the taste of the blood of someone you love isn’t something you forget.

Summary
In the grand scheme of things, how they felt about each other the day they met isn't all that important. The friendship that quickly blossomed, the trust that was gradually built, that mattered more. The undeniable love - what kind would always be up to debate - that grew from the moment the grenade exploded to the very second when the lightning struck them both, that’s what mattered.
They don’t start dating until Eddie gets shot and Buck saves his life. Feelings were already there, long before they even stepped foot onto that street. There’s something about almost losing a loved one that puts everything into perspective. It makes him think about priorities and reminds him that he could lose someone he loves without the privilege of loving them first.
How ironic, considering where they are now.

Buck is back in Los Angeles after a two-year absence. He is married and has just had a baby. The team learns that he experienced new traumas during his absence and a new one is added when he arrives in town. Everyone surrounds him and helps him to overcome this terrible ordeal. Eddie does everything to help him become himself again and perhaps hope to win him back, gently.
