Try as he might, Charlie couldn’t quite quell his nerves.
He bit at his thumb nail, which was already bitten down more than enough. He pulled his hand away from his mouth, shaking his head slightly as he walked up to the office doors. He’d been inside the building a handful of times now, twice for interviews, and once for his orientation day, but he still checked the sign on the door, making sure he had the right address.
He’d also looked it up on Google maps again too, just in case he somehow forgot the directions. He was well aware of how stupid it might be for him to worry so much but it was his first official full day of work, he couldn’t afford to be late because he somehow forgot what building he was going into. He was also incredibly aware he was catastrophizing but therapy also taught him it was fine to catastrophize, as long as he knew that’s what it was.
He was fine, nothing was going to happen to him, he just had to keep that in mind.
(Or Charlie and Nick are living together in domestic bliss, but when Charlie starts a new job and Geoff retires, he finds himself struggling to stay on track.)

Nick was always there in the mornings, in fact Charlie was pretty sure he never actually left, usually seeing him behind the counter when he’d leave for home at 2:00.
On the days Charlie wasn’t there, he wondered if Nick stuck to the same routine, or if he worked a different shift. Charlie went grocery shopping every Saturday at 1:30, usually his only trip into town, and he never once saw Nick. The handful of times a month he’d go in for other reasons, it would be Nickless as well. It was as if the man only existed inside of the building, Schrödinger’s Nick, he’d taken to calling it in his head.
(Or, Charlie’s a recluse writer who can’t seem to write his second novel and Nick is a former rugby star who now owns a bakery.)

The bowl of cereal in front of Charlie was wholly unappetizing.
“Ready?” Tori asked him, appearing so suddenly, it made him jump. He answered with a glare, walking over and dumping the soggy cereal and milk into the trash. Thankfully his Mum was busy getting Olly ready for school and couldn’t witness just how much food Charlie didn’t eat.
Tori took that as her answer, disappearing into the hallway as Charlie followed behind. The weather had remained rather chilly and Charlie welcomed the ability to still wear his heavy winter coat. Not only did it protect against the cold, it added another layer of protection over Charlie himself. The more clothing he wore, the better he was hidden to the world around him.
Tori didn’t try to engage him any further, especially when he placed his earbuds in as soon as they stepped outside. Sometimes he wasn’t even listening to anything, preferring yet another barrier between him and the outside world, a sign that he wasn’t one to engage with.
But it wasn’t like many people engaged with him now anyway.
